I just noticed that you don't see many overweight Israeli men and women under forty five. This must be because military service is mandatory for all men and women under forty five with some well carved out exceptions . Most of the population under 45 are in the reserves and have to be in reasonably good shape because they get training every year and can be called up at any time.

2. Actually, I think it is diet.

It is the same for Arabs, and Asians. It is rare to see overweight people from that area, with the exception of the wealthy. Now, this opinion, I haven't see any reports, but it is my understanding that non-Western nations eat much healthier than Westerners.

My dad was really skinny when he lived in Syria. When he came to the states, he put on a lot of weight. It has to do with the diet. In Syria he would his breakfast would have included pita bread with some fresh fruit and cheese. Now, his breakfast might be a Kit Kat bar (and no I'm not kidding!)

military service has nothing to do with it. Most people I know (including myself), whether or not they stay in shape, don't do so with service in mind.

I wouldn't say there are less overweight people in Israel; it's just that the degree of extreme obesity is much lower than in the US.
