Rawstory:Gore responds to White House 'hypocrisy' comments
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 04:57 PM by cal04
In response to White House comments that Gore exhibited "hypocrisy" in calling for a Special Prosecutor, saying that the Clinton administration had wiretapped some Americans, Gore will make this statement shortly. It was leaked to RAW STORY in advance.

GORE: "The Administration's response to my speech illustrates perfectly the need for a special counsel to review the legality of the NSA wiretapping program.

The Attorney General is making a political defense of the President without even addressing the substantive legal questions that have so troubled millions of Americans in both political parties. There are two problems with the Attorney General's effort to focus attention on the past instead of the present Administration's behavior. First, as others have thoroughly documented, his charges are factually wrong. Both before and after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was amended in 1995, the Clinton/Gore Administration complied fully and completely with the terms of the law.

Second, the Attorney General's attempt to cite a previous administration's activity as precedent for theirs - even though factually wrong - ironically demonstrates another reason why we must be so vigilant about their brazen disregard for the law. If unchecked, their behavior would serve as a precedent to encourage future presidents to claim these same powers, which many legal experts in both parties believe are clearly illegal.

The issue, simply put, is that for more than four years, the executive branch has been wiretapping many thousands of American citizens without warrants in direct contradiction of American law. It is clearly wrong and disrespectful to the American people to allow a close political associate of the president to be in charge of reviewing serious charges against him. The country needs a full and independent investigation into the facts and legality of the present Administration's program."

9. Think of how quickly Kerry capitulated after the election; perhaps
the Bushies used info garnered during this program to help "persuade" him?
Just sayin'.....

28. I've always strongly suspected that the Bushies were using blackmail
to "help" prominent people toe their line. And when the NSA spying scandal broke, I though "of course!"

38. If so, it would explain what I and others overheard at the debates...
Bush went up to Kerry after the debate was over and Bush mouthed something like "where can we meet"...which I found at the time troubling.
after the capitulation, I brought it up and was soundly thrashed for doing so here at DU.

41. I would bet
the bank that they are spying on their political enemies. In my heart I don't doubt it for a second. When you think about it, for what other reason would they need to circumvent obtaining a warrant? A warrant would be granted for any valid reason.

The Attorney General is inept and is economical with the truth. Rumor has it that he was indicted but was thrown out.

27. Wow, Gore Certainly Has Changed
Even though I voted for him in 2000, I did so reluctantly at the time. I thought he was really dull. But his recent speeches have certainly impressed me. He is *kicking ass* now. I'd vote for him in '08 in a second.

Al speaks powerfully for me. I have backed him for the presidency since the late 80s -- and now I think he is twice the man he was in 2000. If he runs, I take a year off to work for his campaign.

I'd had to listen to people gripe about how weak the Democrats are. I ask them if they have heard any of Al's speeches, and they say no. This time, I sent the transcript of his speech on presidential power and an mp3 to my mass mailing list. People really must hear the man Al has become.

37. Al Gore should ramp up his speeches.
He has become a firebrand as of late and should deliver more speeches and be even more fiery. I feel that he could bring the Dem Party around to becoming an actual Opposition Party.

44. As a layman, I've always thought "precedent" referred to the
legal justification of a judicial ruling on the basis of an earlier one to the same effect, not a naughty child's excuse that Johnny did it, too.
