Anyone who has seen the clip of Bush gabbing at Blair during the G8 summit will know what I mean. The man not only eats with his mouth open (yechhh!) but talks through a mouthful of food. Just goes to show, all the money in the world can't buy manners or class. The man in a total embarrassment -- at G8 he looked like a caveman amongst a meeting of world leaders. Little wonder he felt so "at home" at a pig roast.

I also saw a pic posted somewhere among the G8 threads yesterday of Putin and George together, with our feckless leader sitting in a chair, legs spead awkwardly apart, in which he struck a posture where I couldn't tell if he was suffering from a massive case of 'roids of was trying to push his package into camera view. God, he's such a boor.

Good ol' Babs -- she did such a great job teaching her kids the basics, huh?

I'd have to disagree, at least generationally. Father George, notwithstanding several memorable moments - and really, who didn't want to vomit on the Japanese PM 15 years ago? - was at least 'presidential' in his carriage and bearing, whatever we understand that to mean. And do ypu really think that a robber-baron like Pappy Prescott could possibly have been so boorish, being a well-educated coporate magnate and all. Aren't we talking about the era of "How to win friends and influence people": money - asshatery = respect

25. Before we annoint Prescott as classy

it sort of *is* worth remembering that he was part of the ugly little gang that dug up Geronimo and took his Skull back to the Skull and Bones lair at Yale.

And Poppy's "presidential" campaign had to be warned straight-out that if they tried to sleaze then-Candidate Clinton for being a horn-dog, that the Clinton campaign would wallpaper America with detailed, factual accounts of Poppy's multi-decade dalliance with his own special lady-friend.

I tend to concur with the earlier poster. The Bush Family, in other circumstances, would be the family at the end of the block with stacked tires in the yard.

They are the trashy little, pig-eyed, jug-eared loutish legacy of the cheapening of the American political process.

29. Again, I disagree with the premise

I never claimed that Prescott *was* classy, only that it was his outward image. Clinton may have gotten blown in the Oval Office, but his demeanor was classy. Poppy may have thrown up on the Japanese PM, but he was all "Oh my stars and garters! I cant believe I did that" apologetic about it. Prescott may have dug up Geronimo's skull, but I'm betting he wore a three piece suit while doing it.

The difference I'm noting is not one in private/personal behavior but in public carriage. Take the recent Putin smack-down: Clinton probablyn would have had a witty comeback. Poppy may have, but if not he would have seethed privately then secretly funded the Chechen rebels in revenge. Prescott woud have done the same, but publicly.

W's response? "Just wait..." I could FEEL * grabbing his balls as he said that. He's the kind of moran (look guys, I'm finally using it!) who would shit on the table at a state dinner then point out the candy corn - or, more likely, belch the words to the national anthem.

I do not condone crass private behavior hidden behind polite public demeanor, I'm just noting the difference.

What I'm finding difficulty with this week - and I've already noted it regarding Ava's use of "duelling Banjos" in her most recent - is the collapsing of the Bushkin and their ilk with the stereotypical, "Deliverance"-style rural white-trash. Having come from that stock, or rather having been raised amongst it, I maintain most steadfastly that it is of a different nature altogether. * may well have descended to that level had he not a moneyed family, but to suggest that his father and grandfather (and Bar, ferchrissakes!) are akin to the cousin-humping, oven-on-the-front-porch, applesauce crew is ludicrous.

30. You proceed from a false assumption, then

NOTHING in my post compared the Bushbarians to "Deliverance-style" white trash. I come from generations of poor, rural Appalachian stock and manners (or the lack thereof) or class have nothing to do with money. The Bush family has money out the wazoo and yet look at George - ignorant, boorish, crude and mean. Do you think Neil perhaps sets a better example? Or lil' Babs and Jenna? How about Mama Barbara, who's as mean as a snake? No, as I have stated, class and manners have nothing to do with how much money you have and the Bush family is proof of that.

I never suggested anything such thing, so your apology is accepted. It is you who have raised a comparison between Bush's lack of manners and decorum to poor "white trash", not me. If anything, Bush is proof that money and a bloodline doesn't equate with class. If you want someone who has unfailingly defended the stereotyping of the rural poor, I suggest you visit my journal. Your aim is misguided.

I take no issue with your original post. I agree whole-heartedly, in fact. Rather what I had lighted upon is from G.C.Mandrake's reply, as follows:

This is the "Deliverance"-style apple dandies reference I noted and took issue with. The other circumstances would have to go back generations in order for the Bushes to be that family.

Nor do I dispute the fact that they seem to be mean-spirited, petty, small people. However, to me * appears to be the only one to use these stellar qualities as his daily stock-in-trade. His family at least has the decency to *try* to conceal them on a day-to-day basis. Of course, that's all it is, and the black brassiere of their inner selves all too readily shows through the white blouse of outer appearances.

How's THAT for a labored metaphor?

Or as Mandrake continued:

But W's generation is the only one to wear it on their sleeves like mourning widows.
