Rice will go to the Middle East only if it will "make a difference"

WASHINGTON, July 16 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, under criticism from Former US officials over what they termed lack of strong US diplomacy to defuse the tense military situation in Lebanon, said on Sunday she would be ready to go to the Middle East to mediate only if the trip produce "a difference" in bringing an end to the exchange of the military attacks between Israel and Hezbollah.

"I certainly stand ready to do so when I believe that I can make a difference," Rice said from St Petersburg in an interview with the Fox News aired here earlier today.

"Simply going in and shuttling back and forth if you don't know where you are trying to go is not going to help," she said.

"I am thinking about it, as you might imagine, and assessing it every day.

"That was not exactly a firm answer," ( Former Secretary of State) Madeleine Albright said in reaction to Rice's remarks about a plan to visit the region.

6. She has not been given any authority by
her handlers to do anything substantive that would make a difference. After all, why would she want to jeopardize the neocon vote in an election year? They have spent a long time building it.

9. I believe diplomacy involves asking both sides questions

and trying to find a middle ground that both can accept. If you don't ask questions, you'll never make a difference.

1. This administration doesn't ask anyone any questions because they don't care what anyone else thinks. They only care about what THEY think.

2. Bush doesn't believe in middle ground, has never been to middle ground and wouldn't recognize it if he ever saw it.

3. Again, what both sides want and can accept is immaterial. Its all about what Bush and his buddies want.

The bottom line is that this is an opportunity for Bush to be presidential. I'm thinking he'll flunk this one too.
