Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 09:15 PM by tyedyeto
during the Stanley Cup play-offs, freepers everywhere were booing right along with them. Anti-Mexican antagonists were cheering them on. But an Italian flag... go for it?

On edit: remember it was the Edmondton Oilers, a Canadian team, the Sharks were playing.

36. Sarcasm and irony is woefully lost on some people.
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 09:29 PM by TankLV
As replys to your OP prove.

But there is a big difference:

The Italians showing their flag were just showing support for a SPORT - like displaying a flag at some Italian festival or the Mexican flag a Cinco de Mayo celbrations, etc.

The issues framed by many is that Mexicans were ILLEGAL, and were clamoring for support for claiming CITIZENSHIP IN THIS COUNTRY by showing ANOTHER COUNTRY'S FLAG - aparently the TRUE choice of their REAL AFFECTIONS, not the supposed country THEY WISH TO BECOME CITIZENS OF.

Kinda like seeking a job one company by loudly and conspicuously displaying the logo/uniform of a competitor company - not smart at all.

BIG DIFFERENCE.

And that is why the Mexicans' display of their "flag" was INSULTING to many of us.

BAD PR.

But, then again, this "illegal" "legal" crap is just so much baggage.

The LAWS were changed AFTER most of the EUROPEAN immigrants came here as a knee-jerk reaction to those already here at the turn of the last century. If there were the same laws in place now that were in place then, there would be NO issues of "illegal" versus "legal".

I prefer to think of myself as a "citizen of the world" who just happens to reside in a particular geographic locale. I hope and pray for the day when this is the norm.

People booing another team's national anthem (Canadian) even though that was where the team was from.

So, why not the same outcry now? Have we distanced ourselves from this past May to where it no longer matters? I would hope so, but I think it will always depend on which country from now on.

"Some animals were more equal than others" (probably misquoting again - from "Animal Farm").

What I have always found most curious - is how we are expecting tolerance from people who had a problem with accepting Irish and Italian and Polish immigrants - people ostensibly of the "same" race - when talking about white-hispanic or white-black relations.

(Damn this laptop keyboard - does anybody else have problems with the cursor jumping into unwanted places, whole sentences deleted and other annoying crap as much as I seem to?)

I mostly use a mouse to DRAW - hence the frustration at typing.

My computer at work is a nice new desktop - and they gave me my old one to use at home - since we can't seem to find any mid-upper level help - as a way so I can work more hours without being across town.

I actually love what I do, so it could be worse!

72. If they love Italy so much, why don't they just move back?
And it's bad enough they were waving their damn flag, but they had no respect for the law by dancing in the streets. They were committing ILLEGAL acts of jaywalking and I know they violated several noise ordinances.

And it's because of them that I have no health insurance right now. And it's because of them that the salaries of corporate CEOs are 262 times the average American worker when only 40 years ago, CEOs earned an average of 24 times the average worker.

And the worse thing is, it's so hard to tell them apart from Mexicans. Even their damns flags are alike. We are being invaded, I tell you. Invaded.

151. And of course all of them are illegal immigrants who do not want
to be deported. Who protest the U.S. Congress passing laws about immigration.

You have yet to answer a simple question:

Would you let immigrants burst into your home, take over your bed, your kitchen, your job?

I really wonder how many of you, who support an open border, know of anyone who lost a job because of these law paying illegal people. Sure, blaming the employer. Simple, weasel way of facing the problem.

And how many more laws do you think should be broken. How about someone who break into your home and rob you? Hey, he is just hungry.

This may be a joke for you, but it is very real for people in California who see their cities being over run by illegal immigrants, who see the quality of their schools and health care being deteriorated to accommodate illegal immigrants and their children.

But, hey, who care about specifics, if all you need is to sit in your spacious, air conditioned room and click on your keyboard without lifting a finger to squarely face the problem and decide about a course of action.

And it is the Mexican flags during the demonstrations that sent many voters to tell their Representatives not to give up, no amnesty, no guest workers, no consideration.

156. So when exactly was it that "the immigrants burst into
your home, took over your bed, your kitchen, your job?"

Did you call the cops? Did they complain that your mattress was lumpy? Did they wash the dishes after themselves when they took over your kitchen? How did your former boss react when he or she saw soemone different sitting at your desk?

about illegal immigration.

157. That's exactly what happened to Native Americans and ...
Mexicans after the U.S. invasion and occupation of the Southwest, except that those "illegal aliens" took their houses, their beds, their kitchens, their jobs and many of their lives. Too bad the Mexicans didn't build a wall on the U.S. Mexican border in 1845.

The OP says NOTHING about undocumented workers.

What is the difference between Italian flags being waved around this country and the Mexican ones in early May? The color of the skin of those waving them.

BTW, I live very close to the Mexican border here in AZ and see undocumented workers occasionally. Do I call the Border Patrol? No way! I'd rather see punishment for the employers than the people seeking a better life than the one they left behind. Can you blame them? All they want is what's best for their family. If you tell me you'd never, ever seek a better rate of pay (I'm talking about utter poverty here) and lifestyle for your family if you were in their position, I'd have to say you were not being completely honest.

You want to make $1-$5 per day? Go live there and report back to us what it's like.

On edit:

Have you walked a mile in their shoes, border or no border? Do you KNOW what economic poverty is like in their country? Have you ever worked for an 8 hour day and been paid 1 or 2 dollars (or the country's equivalent)?

100,000 in Mexico protest Obrador loss <-------misleading headline

By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer Sat Jul 8, 8:38 PM ET

MEXICO CITY - More than 100,000 defiant supporters of leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador massed Saturday in a bid to overturn his narrow election defeat with protests that threatened to widen Mexico's regional and class divisions.

Lopez Obrador told the huge crowd he would present allegations of fraud to the nation's electoral court Sunday and request that every one of more than 41 million votes be recounted, to expose what he called wrongdoing that cost him the election.

"We are going to ask that they clean up the elections. We are going to ask that they count all the votes — vote-by-vote, poll-by-poll," Lopez Obrador said to wide applause.

He called for nationwide marches that would converge on Mexico City in another rally July 16, provoking groans of disappointment when he told demonstrators not to block highways.

152. Oh DID I EVER.
Hear in AStoria, NY......my apt overlooks an intersection which is the main drag....and they get in thier cars....and honk and wave thier flags and scream....for a couple hours....until the police break them up....then they come back later.....

It was insanity. I was planning on being away during this time but I screwed up. I was worried a riot would break out.
