I grew up believing we (the United States) were the good guys...
That it was communists who used routine torture and disappeared people. It was heinous dictators who lorded it over their people and kept them hungry and destitute. After all, when people are hungry they are more easily controlled and kept in submission.

Reading the roster this morning of crimes committed in the name of my beloved country and in our names, and knowing that there are more revelations coming is just disheartening.

Torture and disappearance of people in Honduras with the help of our CIA:

More revelations of torture at Guantanamo:

The rape and murder of the Iraqi girl and her family...

There are so many wonderful things about this country and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. But until we own up to the crimes to humanity that have been committed in our names, we don't have a chance to make things better. We must not continue to allow this sort of behavior from those who are committed to our protection. What was done in these cases was "protecting American interests", not protecting America.

I believe that we need shift of focus from protecting corporations to protecting people.

2. Hear, hear. I too miss the days of thinking we were the good guys.
This current administration stole that away from me. Is there any desire out there to restore our good name? What we as a country at least aspired to be?

3. The communists believed the same thing
That they are the good guys and we are the bad guys.

The "insurgents" believe the same thing. That we are the bad guys and they are the good guys defending their homeland.

Propaganda exists in all countries.

5. 8 years ago
The world was beginning to think we were the good guys. Me too.

So that tells us that it is the government giving us a bad name. Not the government we had 8 years ago, just this one.

So how did such a bad government gain power? And why does it work so hard to gain absolute power?

Could it be that they are the biggest bunch of crooks ever? And if so, do you think they would stop at anything to steal power?

6. I remember when my eyes first opened
It was my first year at university (1986) and a professor gave me an assignment... On many levels, I miss the ignorant girl who believed in her nation and its motives.
