ALERT: tv show: Peron show.. LW inspiration on now

HBO... i am not sure of the whole show, but so far it is a must see.

on right now

A musical, all lines are sung. But a very serious script. Centers on Peron of Argentina, about fifties, and around his wife Evita or Eva. I have not seen it before, and only now have seen a few minutes of it, but seems very LW and is very inspirational.

Comments anyone who has actually seen it all?

ps.. Evita P. was an actress before marrying Peron, i think.

1. It must be "Evita" - I don't have HBO, but I can't imagine TWO musicals

about Peron. It's a pretty good movie, based on a glorious Andrew Lloyd Weber-Tim Rice Broadway musical. Peron made some good leftish-sounding statements, but basically he was just another South American tinpot dictator. :(

2. then "movie is greater than the real source"

a common happening . If peron was as you say, and i dont know much of him, you may be right, then this movie far exceeds him. It would be a fine intro film for newbies to DU. Very educational. I am learning from it.

PS my title is from the phrase i have seen oft " movie was greater than the book".

3. Good movie. Watch for Che Guevara as the conscience.

Played by Anthony Banderas, he exposes Evita and Juan for what they really are. Madonna, surprisingly, does a good job.

4. VERY VERY well crafted film. Apart from all politics, i must say that

the color, faces, music, and script clarity are top notch. At the highest cinematic level. Last Year at Marienbad comes to mind for equal quality.

And his next wife, Isobel, I think, ruled after he died.

BTW, this is a very popular Broadway and London musical that's been around for years. The movie was made much later than the stage play.

7. Peron came back from exile in the early 70s and was elected president

(He had been overthrown by the military in the 1950s)

By then he was old and in poor health---he died shortly thereafter. He was succeeded by his wife (not Evita, who had died in the Fifties); she was overthrown by the military. A series of military juntas fought the "Dirty War" against the Argentinian left until the disasterous Falklands/Malvinas War with Britain brought about a restoration of democracy.

Peron is a difficult figure to evaluate---a bit of a fascist, a militarist, also a populist. The closest figure to him in American politics might be Huey Long.

Evita died young. He was exiled, and Isabel Peron eventually came back and ruled after he died.
