Quote for the Day
"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all—security, comfort, and freedom. When...the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

Edward Gibbons, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published between 1776–1788

1. That's the key
the right harps on "freedom isn't free", but never explain that phrase. What it means to me is to take responsibility for one's actions. It means walking your talk. The neocons in this country have supported war since Viet Nam, but haven't served, and haven't asked their children to serve. They've done their best to make sure veterans don't get the services they need, especially health services; after all, the richest 1 % are starving for money and need more, more, more!

3. This is chillingly appropos for our times.
It's so discouraging we haven't developed more fully in the 2000 years or so since the Roman Empire fell. :eyes:

4. History = Human nature repeated ad infinitum

"Those people had the same troubles as we have now. Men don't change. The only thing new in the world is the history you don't know."—Harry S. Truman
