http://www.aclu.org/safefree/spying/23469prs20060116.html

NEW YORK - The American Civil Liberties Union today ran a full-page advertisement in the Washington Post criticizing the president for authorizing the National Security Agency to engage in illegal surveillance of Americans.

The ad invokes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights pioneer who was an innocent victim of illegal government wiretapping and draws the correlation between abuse of government power and illegal warrantless wiretapping authorized by President Bush.

"It has never been acceptable for the government to spy on Americans without having to go to court and present evidence as to why the individual is under suspicion. It was unacceptable when they spied on Martin Luther King and it is unacceptable today," said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. "This fundamental tenet of American democracy has been blatantly violated by President Bush and he must be held accountable. No one, most importantly our elected leader, is above the law.”

10. Great - too bad it's the ACLU. The Democrats should be doing this
Sadly, the ACLU turns off a lot of people.

12. True, the ACLU has been a target for right-wing gas-bags for decades,
even when the ACLU has defended the rights of the right-wing gas-bags.

And sadly, the Democrats also turn off a lot of people.

I'll keep supporting both groups.

13. Yep - I was at a dinner party and a RWer was bitching about the ACLU
I calmly asked why she didn't like the ACLU.
She said something like, "They defend terrorists."
To which I asked, "you mean, like Rush Limbaugh??"
She was sort of dumbfounded and finally said, "Rush isn't a terrorist."
"Well, I don't know about that," says I, "but the ACLU defended him during his little Oxycotin ordeal."

Kinda burst her balloon. We haven't spoken about politics since. Truth hurts.

I felt bad because I was unable to renew my membership during some tight times, but finally renewed with a contribution last month.

Carrying the card, I am.

18. The ad gives me chills...
I see the nobility of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and remember his words, and his actions, and his sacrifice, then look below, to see a little man who is not worthy to utter Dr. King's name. This is a very powerful ad for me, and I hope it will affect others the same way. I see on top a man who was a giant, and I see below a pathetic, petty, hollow shell of someone who pretends to be a man. The differences between the two are glaring.
