Bush promotes war, candidate in state that has become GOP trouble spotJune 28, 2006 3:08 PM
ST. LOUIS (AP) - President Bush tried to pump up the Iraq war effort and a Republican Senate candidate Wednesday during a visit to a state he won handily two years ago but has become a trouble spot for the GOP in the midterm elections.
Bush tried to boost the mission in brief remarks to the media at the end of his private meeting at the VFW hall. He said the troops are spreading democracy and peace and that even though he understands their work is hard, it is necessary.
''We're winning,'' Bush said.
Bush helped bring in nearly $1 million at the fundraiser Wednesday evening, supported by about 500 donors who gave roughly $750,000 for Talent and another $200,000 for the state Republican Party.
