Jim Webb DEMOLISHES First Swiftboating Attempt by Allen!
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 06:53 PM by DoveTurnedHawk
Now THIS is how you respond to attempted swiftboating! Allen tried to question Webb's patriotism in connection with the stupid flag burning amendment. I bet he didn't count on THIS response from Webb!

--

The campaign of U.S. Senate candidate Jim Webb today called the attacks on Webb’s patriotism by Allen’s campaign, “weak-kneed attacks by cowards” and demanded that Allen and his campaign apologize.

“George Felix Allen Jr. and his bush-league lapdog, Dick Wadhams, have not earned the right to challenge Jim Webb’s position on free speech and flag burning. Jim Webb served and fought for our flag and what it stands for, while George Felix Allen Jr. chose to cut and run. When he and his disrespectful campaign puppets attack Jim Webb they are attacking every man and woman who served. Their comments are nothing more than weak-kneed attacks by cowards. George Felix Allen Jr. needs to apologize to Jim Webb and to all men and women who have served our nation,” Webb spokesman Steve Jarding said.

On Tuesday, George Felix Allen Jr. and his campaign issued a press release in which the Allen campaign, through Wadhams, implied that Webb’s position in support of the Free Speech Amendment to the U.S. Constitution amounted to a political act and not a defense of our Constitution, which Webb fought for and for which he was highly decorated. George Felix Allen Jr. did not serve.

“I believe it is precisely because of bush-league attacks like this that John Zogby, a highly respected, independent polling expert just this week said that Dick Wadhams is not fit to serve as a campaign manager and that George Allen should find a new manager,” Jarding said.

While Jim Webb and others of George Felix Allen Jr.’s generation were fighting for our freedoms and for our symbols of freedom in Vietnam, George Felix Allen Jr. was playing cowboy at a dude ranch in Nevada. People who live in glass dude ranches should not question the patriotism of real soldiers who fought and bled for this country on a real battlefield,” Jarding said.

“Is Dick Wadhams willing to publicly say that Colin Powell, John Glenn and Bob Kerrey are unpatriotic for having the same position on the flag burning amendment that Jim Webb has? Ask him,” Jarding said.

12. Swifts were independent group of vets, not Bush campaign -
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 07:10 PM by blm
They attacked Kerry's service record.

When Delay and Lott attcaked Kerry in 2003 he nailed them much like Webb did, but to a reporter.

Swiftboating is different than confrontations between campaigns.

Of course we know that swifts were really working for Rove, but no way to prove it the first day.

Kerry would have loved to make it against Bush and Rove. It's EASY to attack chickenhawks - swifting, using men who did serve, is a whole other circumstance. GOPs learned that you can't take real vets on directly - you have to do it using other vets to make it work.

Joe Conason: 'Kerry fires back at G.O.P. snipers'
Posted on Wednesday, March 06 @ 09:37:02 EST
This article has been read 1465 times.
By Joe Conason, New York Observer

We are living in a time when scoundrels seek to bully the loyal opposition and demonize all dissent for their own advancement. That’s why certain Republican politicians and pundits have assaulted Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and other Democrats in terms usually reserved for foreign and domestic enemies.

What has been even more troubling than this ugly campaign, however, is the passivity of those who are its targets.

Mr. Daschle and his colleagues have remained inert during recent weeks and months, while their adversaries compared him with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and accused him of giving "aid and comfort" to the nation’s enemies. They have stood by in silence while authoritarian propaganda emanated from Republican fax machines and spread across the country. They’ve allowed the South Dakota Democrat, an Air Force veteran and bioterror target, to be taunted like a traitor by Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and other tough-talkers who avoided military service as if it were anthrax.

<<<<<

So it was refreshing to hear at last from a patriot who found his voice and addressed the Republican Congressional leadership in the tone that they deserve. The first Democrat to speak up was, unsurprisingly, a Senator who has been both a war hero and a war protester.

On March 2, John Kerry took the podium at a political dinner in New Hampshire to defend Mr. Daschle, a colleague who is likely to become his rival for their party’s Presidential nomination. What the Massachusetts Senator said about Messrs. Lott and DeLay—and, by implication, about all the would-be White House enforcers—deserved more attention than a single article in his hometown paper, The Boston Globe.

"Let me be clear tonight to Senator Lott and to Tom DeLay: One of the lessons that I learned in Vietnam—a war they did not have to endure—and one of the basic vows of commitment that I made to myself, was that if I ever reached a position of responsibility, I would never stop asking questions that make a democracy strong," he told the audience of New Hampshire Democrats, whose startled murmurs quickly erupted into a standing ovation.

"Those who try to stifle the vibrancy of our democracy and shield policies from scrutiny behind a false cloak of patriotism miss the real value of what our troops defend and how we best defend our troops," he continued. "We will ask questions, and we will defend our democracy."

A combat veteran who received three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star in two Navy tours—and who later founded Vietnam Veterans Against the War—Mr. Kerry has ample stature to challenge the character assassins and commissars of the far right. The day after the Concord dinner, he didn’t hesitate to reiterate his rebuke, adding the name of another Southern-fried chicken hawk.

"My message to Trent Lott and Tom Delay and Dick Armey—each of whom did not have to endure the war in Vietnam … the lesson I learned in that war is, the best way to defend American democracy and our soldiers is to ask the right questions at the right time."

Suddenly, it was the Republicans who had nothing to say.

attack the chickenhawk politicians - Kerry did it himself a few times, as shown above.

You all are comparing a group of vets and chickenhawk politicians as if they're the same - it's OBVIOUS chickenhawks are easy fodder - they are not the same as swift vets. And they are NOT the same as attacking politicians - not then - when they first came out noone had any idea how they were connected to Bush, only a strong suspicion.

Webb and other vets will be benefitting from all that has been learned about the swifts and their GOP funders now. But when it all comes down to it, fights against CHICKENHAWK POLITICIANS are WAY easier to have and more fun to have.

Vets on vets is just ugly through and through.

btw, thanks for the niceties... ;) I wish I didn't HAVE to feel like I'm on truth patrol all the time. I used to come here posting about how Bush/Moon was using the fundies and was one of the first to post about voting machine fraud before the 2002 races. Defending Kerry has become a focus because he gets attacked for just about every move he makes from one side or another.

I don't foresee any letup. LOL

33. All the free media?
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 07:24 PM by karynnj
When Kerry did respond - and he did it Very strongly before the Firefighter's union, HE GOT VERY LITTLE MEDIA, far less than they freely gave to the SBVT. You can justify that they gave the SBVT more time (in total) on this issue than the Democratic nominee for President. They also ignored the Naval records that existed were all exactly as Kerry said. (Contrast to the TANG Rather story - the entire thing was dropped when they couldn't authenticate documents for which they had support on the content - and the records were "missing".)

Not to mention that the accuracy of Webb's record is not being challanged - this is two politicians throwing slurs. This is in no way similar, it is similar to the Kerry story BLM posted. (patriotism was questioned in both cases and there was an outraged from the heart response in both cases.

49. Yes and when Charlie Gibson on GMA
attacked Kerry with Republican garbage on his medals, this was April, 2004. I will never forget this interview, and I have not turned on GMA since.

Kerry responses:

KERRY: So the fact is that I have, I have been accurate precisely about what took place. And I am the one who later made clear exactly what happened. I mean, it's just, this is a controversy that the Republicans are pushing, the Republicans have spent $60 million in the last few weeks trying to attack me, and this comes from a president and a Republican Party that can't even answer whether or not he showed up for duty in the National Guard. I'm not going to stand for it.

GIBSON: You called them in and you made the distinction and said, I didn't throw my medals away, I just threw the ribbons away. You made the distinction.

KERRY: I was asked specifically in greater detail about what took place. And I answered the question truthfully. Which was exactly consistent with what happened in 1971. I mean, Charlie, go back and get the file footage. There were millions of people watching on television. I stood up in front of the nation and I took my ribbons off my chest just as other veterans did. This is a phony controversy. This is being pushed yesterday by Karen Hughes of the White House on Fox. It shows up at a several different stations at the same time. The Republicans are running $10 million this week to attack my credentials on defense. This comes from a president who can't even show or prove that he showed up for duty in the National Guard. And I'm not going to stand for it.

more

And what the Republicans are trying to do is make this into an issue because they have no record to run on. They can't go out and talk about jobs or health care or the environment. So they're going to attack 35 years ago. Last week in an unprecedented attack, they sent congressmen to the floor of the Senate, of the House, to attack me on the anniversary of my speech. George Bush has yet to explain to America whether or not, and tell the truth, about whether he showed up for duty. I'm not going to get attacked on something that I did, that is a matter of record, that the press saw, that I did in front of the entire nation, and everyone then understood. There was no distinction. We threw away the symbols of the war. I'm proud I stood up and fought against it. Proud I took on Richard Nixon. And I think, to this day, there's no distinction between the two.

133. Two things about that interview
1) Most of the main stream media is now owned by republicans and are an operational wing of the republican party. So don't expect them to tell the truth.

1) Kerry stumbles over his words. He may be right, but it always sounds like he's hiding something.

But in making them deny it as Lyndon Johnson said when told he had no proof his opponent was fucking a pig. Make them deny all connections to the lunatic Bush. Make them deny they want a permanent underclass. Make them deny they aren't lying scumbags, war profiteers and treasury looters. Make them deny their Klan connections. Make them deny their homosexuality (hint: Orin Hatch and Mitch McConnell look gay to me). Make them deny their mental illness. Make them deny Ann D. Coulter's dick. Make them deny the pictures of W giving Don King a blow job.
They denied they were out to get Bill Clinton and only interested in the "rule of law."
Ahh, that felt good.

45. Can we keep this thread positive about Webb, instead of
putting down the man who . . . ENDORSED Webb and possibly was the difference in Webb's victory in the primary. I can tell you as a Virginian that it was Kerry's endorsement that allowed me to take a second look at Webb, and to decide to vote for him over Miller. And I will continue to remind you Webb supporters of this fact, every time people dare to criticize Kerry. Don't bite the hand that feeds (and yes, Kerry may be doing more fundraising for Webb). Show some respect, please. Thank you.

Anyway, back to the subject, I especially loved the "Felix" and the "Jr." part, as it deftly separates George from his coach Dad.

to be using repub points to discredit a good man.
For your information, Senator Kerry has supported Webb with money, and backing. Kerry's appearances in WV with Webb and his kind words for Webb are probably what put Webb over the top. I had no time for Webb until Senator Kerry endorsed him. I don't like to see people make unfair references to Kerry's situation and all those whom he had to battle and Webb's battle with just one little man. No comparison, no similarities.

Take note Dems: Instead of trying to explain things like "well, I didn't cut and run...I voted for this because...." What you do is what the Webb campaign just did: You go for the throat and you let those chickenhawk chickenshits have it and throw it right back at them ten-fold.

That's right 65%-32% all over Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia gave Webb the nomination over former Diebold and outsourcing specialist Harris Miller. It will crush Allen. 70-30% and turnout will be huge. We're sick of being represented by this joke Allen. He was never respected as Governor and he's even more disliked now. We know who he is, those of us who pay attention, now the whole state will find out. What fool they are. His campaign should have bent over backward to avoid this. Webb was well prepared and, my God, look at that campaign manager's statement...sweet!

We're rokken in the Old Dominion.

that is pitting a take no prisoners Dem (I'm in shock) against a fake redneck coward. I can't wait for Allen to try and assert his Southern credentials. Southern, as in Palos Verdes Estates in Southern California where Allen is best remembered for sporting the Confederate flag on his lapel and spending his idle time spraypainting racist graffiti at his school hoping to incite a race riot.

against Bush. Webb has the advantage of one on one. Kerry's battles were coming from many different directions. Presidential elections can not be reduced to name calling.
Senator Kerry has learned his lessons from the 04 campaign. He now speaks out and speaks his mind. He speaks from his heart and he votes on principle. He no longer leaves things go without responding. Kerry has and will continue to fight for what is right. Just watch him.

108. Dick Wadhams is Rove-lite
http://www.slate.com/id/2120558/
Dick Wadhams
Karl Rove's heir apparent.
By Alexandra Starr
Posted Friday, June 10, 2005, at 7:30 AM ET

John Thune's 2004 challenge to former Sen. Tom Daschle looked a little like a kamikaze mission. Two years previously, Thune had lost to Sen. Tim Johnson, another South Dakota Democrat who is a far less impressive campaigner than the former minority leader, in a year when Republicans racked up victories nationwide. But for his race against Daschle, Thune heeded the advice of the Bush White House, dumped his first campaign team, and hired Dick Wadhams. The 49-year-old operative comes across as an aging country boy, but he is renowned for running nasty and effective campaigns. In South Dakota he honed his slash-and-burn reputation, relentlessly attacking Daschle about his Washington, D.C., home, luxury car, and lobbyist wife. At one point, Wadhams accused the former minority leader of having "emboldened Saddam Hussein." Thune won, by a slim margin, and gratefully dubbed his campaign manager "the best pit bull out there."

Rove may have figured that recommending Wadhams for the South Dakota race would be the next best thing to taking Daschle down himself. The two operatives, who have known each other since their days in College Republicans, run similar campaigns. Both shield their candidates from the press. Both like to work with clients who may not be powerhouse political talents, but who sell well as regular guys and thrive on being underestimated. And both win, a lot. . . .

In those races, Wadhams didn't hesitate to run attack ads and regularly belittle his opponents. His approach mirrors not only Rove's but also that of the late Lee Atwater, creator of the Willie Horton ads that helped sink Michael Dukakis. While most campaign managers are defensive about going negative, however—Atwater, for example, claimed he got the idea for the Horton ads from Al Gore's primary campaign—Wadhams is entirely unapologetic. "There's nothing wrong with going negative," he once argued. "Staying positive is a disservice to the voters because differences between the candidates are never revealed." . . .

Can Wadhams take Allen from a little-known senator to a spot on the national ticket? It's a gamble, for sure: Even some Republicans snicker at Allen's tendency to turn every thought into a football metaphor (primaries are "intersquad scrimmages"; Senate recess is "halftime"). Questions about whether Allen is smart enough to be president are sure to dog a potential bid. And Wadhams has never run a national campaign before—or for that matter, a campaign outside a red state. The Republican presidential primary will be crowded, which means that his reflexive go-negative strategy could be risky: Voters who are turned off by the mudslinger as well as the mud will have other options to choose among.

Rove-Gannon Connection?

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2005

One of Gannon's first projects was an attempt to discredit the South Dakota Argus Leader, South Dakota's major paper, and its longtime political writer, David Kranz. According to the National Journal, which reported on this last November, Gannon wrote a series of articles in the summer of 2003 alleging that Kranz, who went to college with Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle, was not only sympathetic to him but was an actual part of the Daschle campaign. These articles then got a huge amount of play on the blogs of John Lauck and Jason Van Beek, and were picked up by other conservative sites and talk radio. The paper was bombarded with messages about its bias and acknowledges that these had an impact on its coverage.

Daschle opponent John Thune's campaign manager was Dick Wadham, an old political crony of Karl Rove's; the kind of pal Rove could ask to hire his first cousin, John Wood, a few years back. Wadham put the bloggers on the campaign payroll and the symbiotic relationship between the campaign, the bloggers and "reporter" Gannon continued. On September 29, Gannon broke the story that Daschle had claimed a special tax exemption for a house in Washington and the bloggers jumped all over it. According to a November 17 posting on South Dakota Politics – a site that Van Beek, who has become a staffer for now-Sen. Thune, has bequeathed to Lauck – "Jeff Gannon, whose reportage had a dramatic impact on the Daschle v. Thune race (his story about Sen. Daschle signing a legal document claiming to be a D.C. resident was published nearly the same day Thune began to run an ad showing Daschle saying, "I'm a D.C. resident) has written an analysis of the debacle."

Daschle aides told Roll Call, "This guy (Gannon) became the dumping ground for opposition research." The connections are so strong that there is an FEC challenge which could be a test case on the limits of the use of the Internet in federal campaigns.

go negative on. Allen has more skeletons than you'd find in most cemetaries, and Wadham's tactics are going to backfire bigtime as Webb's staff decides to unleash them. "Chickenhawk" is only the tip of the iceberg.

125. True...

... Jarding and Saunders both worked for Daschle in the past. , I find it funny how so many think the world of them now.

BTW, thanks for posting these articles. Too many in here bought the Dick Wadhams/Karl Rove spin on Daschle.

124. Why? Webb wasn't attacked by a group of veterans - he was attacked by a
chickenhawk politician. Big difference. Kerry publicly attacked DeLay and Lott as NONSERVING pols in 2003 when they went after him. A whole group of veterans lying about your service is nothing similar.

that the Dem's get some balls and start throwing these smear campaign tactics right back in the Rethug faces. The "Mr. Nice Guy, let's don't offend anyone" stuff has got to go. Or we'll never win another damned election.

115. This is an excellent response. All Dems need to get this down, now,
as we can be certain there will be more Swiftboating coming our way between now and November.

Glass Dude Ranches...that is priceless!

That's exactly what we need.
Bunch of cowardly, lying chickenshit chickenhawks have been getting away with these tactics for far too long.

120. Now thats refreshing.
A Democrat that knows how to play hardball.

When you run against people playing hardball , you damn sure better play hardball too. Good job Jim Webb. Hopefully this will rub off on others who are still playing whiffle ball.

121. If he bothers replying to the snarky
quote hiding behind Powell and Kerrey, call him an idiot because none of them questioned his patriotism so they could trick voters in Virginia. He would like to see Jarding try to trot out Powell to do his trench mouth warfare. Still a cheap shot and cheaper lame comebacks.

And then not get into a stupid exchange with a campaign manager. Let Allen try this tack and see how the dude ranch pictures do when set to Allen hypocrisy music.

129. THIS is why I voted for Webb instead of Harris
I may not like everything Webb says, but I like the way he says it. He is direct, to the point and courageous. He fights fire with more fire. This is exactly how the Democrats should react nationally. They have become so weak livered since they lost congress in 1994 that they reinforce the perception that they stand for nothing and can't be trusted as leaders. I'm a little worried about Webb being a fox in the hen house, but maybe a fox is just what the Dems need these days. If we keep following the likes of Polesi and Lieberman, or campaign the way Kerry and Gore did, it's no wonder people think shrub is a strong leader and Rove is a political genius.

It's about time that the Democrats took off the gloves. Maybe with Webb and Warner, Virginia will lead the reorientation of politics in America. Go Webb!

(I think I'll have to send the man a campaign contribution)
