Why are postal carriers such right wingers?
I walk by a post office's parking lot every day and the bumperstickers on their cars say the same ol' crap! And a lot of postal workers are listening to radio while they are out delivering. For some reason,I doubt they are listening to AAR. Why is this? Anyone know?

Perhaps you shouldn't infer from such a small base that all postal carriers are right wingers....

2. My city doesn't have AAR, to start with.
I guess it depends on where your post office is. I don't see that at mine. So, kind of an extreme generalization, isn't it?

I'd imagine humping all that mail all over hell would make one identify with the working American...

Maybe the people who park in that lot are customers???

5. What do the bumper stickers say? And what radio do they listen to?
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 07:17 PM by Lastlaughin08
Doesn't sound like the post office people in my area. And I hear normal radio stations, at least when I go in there.

Some of the customers cars have RW crap plastered on them, and a few of the usual brainless insults about Ted Kennedy.

Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 07:27 PM by Momgonepostal
There are a couple of W stickers out there and some other Dem stickers. One guy in particular has several, includeing a Phil Angelides for Governor, some kind of anti-war sticker that mentions Bush-Cheney and the one that says, "Save the environment, plant a Bush back in Texas."

And I live in FReeperland.

I think you just have a conservative assortment of postal workers there, but that is not universally the case.

Most postal workes I've known were dems.

Only the ones who "go postal" are wingnuts.

10. My dad is a mail carrier. He's a big-time union guy,Dem & Vietnam Vet.
Although my parents live in Northern California, they are a few miles off Travis AFB. Most of the people there are retired military... and also have a hatred of all things bush and reich-wing.

But then again, this is just one post office (well, actually, there are two in town, but they are both alike in these regards.)

The people at my PO are great, funny, cool people -- and probably liberal.

However, my current PO is the best one I've ever been in. Might not be typical.

19. management is often rightwing
Yeah, I'd say you're right about that. I worked as a casual for about a year, didn't notice
much right-wing propaganda from the working stiff section, but I got a nasty letter from upper management which essentially blacklisted me from working there. I still have the letter, I think.

I guess I could have challenged this legally, but didn't want to waste my time with the process back then.

I'd be very surprised to see some leftwingers in post office upper-management.

15. i have to drive down the road about 1/2 mile to pick up my mail.
in the last 3-1/2 years that i've lived here, i have met 2 mail carriers. they were both young women with big asses and a nasty attitude. i told them who i was asked their names -- they barely looked at me when responding. i'm not generalizing. in my last house my letter carrier was great. she was even invited and came to a neighbor's baby's christening.

20. Local postmasters are political appointees who hire their cronies
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 08:45 PM by Fozzledick
It's probably just your local postmaster. The whole civil service - test system, although intended to select the best candidates, only produces a list of qualified applicants that the local postmaster chooses his hires from. He's supposed to select them from the top of the list, but can usually manipulate the process to "bubble up" his cronies to the top of the list one at a time while ignoring the actual top scorers.

25. You're a little confused
There are NO political appointments in the USPS and there hasn't been since the reorganization in 1972. There is no 'civil service' test given for employment anymore either.

If the 'selecting official', who may or may not be the Postmaster, deviates from the order in the list of candidates, he/she better have a damn good reason and be prepared to substantiate it with documentation. Human Resources at the District level is not going to buy that BS and run the risk of a civil suit or an EEO complaint or a VA complaint, in the case of Veterans.

And one more thing.....most Postal employees are Democrats, however, there are some very stupid ones who will consistently vote against their best interests for the same reasons a lot of Republicans do. Gun control, religion, racism and just plain stupidity.

I have found that management employees are mostly a 50/50 split, all the way to the top but interestingly, there is very little discussion of politics or evidence of influence from it, one way or the other. I would credit the years of being subject to the Hatch Act with keeping politics out of the workplace in a lot of Federal Agencies and Government Corporations. It should be reinstated along with all of the civil service laws to all facets of the Federal Government if we are ever to be a functioning bureaucracy again.

22. Funny Story
I use to be a delivery driver and a van I had to drive the radio was having problems and could not pick up any FM stations, so I was stuck listen to my choice of 2 right wing AM radio stations. So listened to some of Rush during this day, for a laugh. Rush starts talking about overpaid lazy goverment employees and someone calls in and talks about postal employees Rush gets on his soapbox, bitching and moaning about them.

Here's where this comes into play with postal workers, I have a real lazy mailman, I've reported the guy's attitude in the past with no avail. If a car is even 15 feet near the mailbox he won't delivery the mail and if there is a package to big for the mailbox he won't even get out and leave it at the front door or knock to see if anyone is home. I end up having to go pick it up at the post office the next day. Anyways this guy has to be a real right winger because he's always has the radio blaring Rush's AM hate talk so loud I can hear it inside the house when he drives by.

Anyways like a week after I had listened to Rush, I'm outside in the yard when the mailman pulls up, so I go out to talk to him and said I notice he was a big rush fan, he's like yeah, I ask if he heard his discussion from the week before about lazy government workers, he's says yeah again. I then tell him I'm liberal and I had never agreed with Rush before in my life, but after having him for a mailman I couldn't agree more.

30. Alot are ex-military they get very nice bonus points.
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 07:46 AM by newportdadde
My father has worked for the postal service for over 20 years. He is not ex military but he had to go up against those who were when testing for the job. You get some really good bonus points if you in the military or if you spouse died while in the military, consequently you can get a wide range of people working at the post office.

So if your post office has a lot of ex-military I'm not surprised to see the Bush stickers, as an aside the postal union did endorse Kerry in 04 I believe. The main reason is because the Republicans are frothing at the mouth for the chance to privatize the postal service.
