Most Republicans, and many Democrats, do not see what has come to light of Bush's malfeasance as being an imminant threat to our Republic. Only in the last week or two have the number of people supporting impeachment hearings (not necessarily the actual impeachment) risen above 50%.
These threats may be as clear as day to us, but most people are unwilling -- as yet -- to see it that way. Since there are punishing political and economic threats inherent in any impeachment action, most people are hesitant to support it. That's what got the GOP Impeachment team whacked over Clinton's case. If we were to make the definitive push for impeachment NOW, we would fail, and it would be impossible to impeach Bush in the future.
The time to hit him is when his popularity is around 20%, his cronies are starting to go to prison, and when we have a dozen or more specific criminal counts with which to charge him. In other words, keep our powder dry, and then have at him at the most opportune moment. Our policy ought to be that, when the time comes, we go for a quick, efficient, unequivocal "decapitation" -- political, legal, and cultural. Even for the rank-and-file GOP, it should be more of a quick amputation than a long, slow tourniquet applied to a painful, malodorous, gangrenous limb. For that to happen, we need planning, support, and The Law. And if I know Bush, we will be in that position soon enough.
I, too, am eager to see Bush consigned to the trashbin of history, but I want the deed to be decisive. There must be no half-way measures that will allow Team Bush to re-constitute itself like some monster from a Japanese sci-fi epic. Is there any doubt that if we slip, Team Bush will strike back with historically unprecedented ferocity?
When the gavel comes down, it must be a finality, not a formality.
Impeachment, conviction, and removal of a sitting President is the second most potentially destructive event that can happen to our nation -- second only to revolution. In the matter of impeachment, when the time comes, we can't hesitate, we can't flinch, we can't hold back. We must make sure that the public, the elites, the law, and the body of evidence are all with us -- and commit ourself, as a democratic republic, to the deed.
We still have not made enough of a case -- but only a small fraction of Bush's actions have come to light. If that seems discouraging, also keep in mind, most of Team Bush's actions which are clearly illegal have only emerged since late autumn. The scenario has only begun to evolve; the climax will arrive quickly enough.
What should we do? There is plenty of work yet to be done.
Keep digging! Dig in!
