Six people could save our country tomorrow. Here are the 6:
Senators Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Chuck Hagel, Arlen Specter, John McCain, and Lincoln Chaffee. All they have to do is to call a press conference tomorrow and switch parties in the name of personal conscience and the constitiution.
That would change all the Senate Committee Chairmanships to Democrats and - LET THE INVESTIGATIONS BEGIN - ALL OF THEM FROM the bush presidential crimes to Katrina. All of these Senators' seats are safe (except maybe Chaffee)and they would be reelected next time up as Democrats.
:( Yeah, I know, I'm nuts to think it could ever happen (The elephant is a ten-ton monster), but wouldn't it be a glorious day for our Republic?

4. Oh yes
I'm sure that's going to happen. And didn't the group Republican Majority come out against Alito and that has Specter and Snowe and Chaffe? So if they vote for Alito it was pure lip service.

....look on the bright side there's only darkness to confront you.

12. Vinegar and Honey?
I don't know that pressure is the proper angle. Let us lead our politicians. Let us send them an invitation to join us. Then we just have to bully the DLC into accepting them. Just a thought.

5. Specter's office doesn't even register comments...
as much as I hate pRick Santorectum ...his office will ask who you are and for your address...and they will email you a letter to confirm the call.

Specter's office does the following...'yeah...thanks for calling...<hangup>'

18. Is anyone old enough to remember evil Specter at
the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings? What a swine Specter. Plus he has enought dirty deals in his background to sink a boat.Maybe his illness will recur.Sounds mean, but that is how I feel about Specter.

7. I could see Snowe, Collins, and Chaffee. If I weren't aware of
Hagel's connection to Diebold, I might've thought him to be the most likely to switch. Still like the positive thinking though!

8. A couple of points
1. Specter was just reelected in 2004 to a six year term, meaning no election for him until 2010. Anyone here really think he's running again?

2. Snowe is much more vulnerable than Chafee.

13. There's a MAJOR leap to be made for most people
Most Republicans, and many Democrats, do not see what has come to light of Bush's malfeasance as being an imminant threat to our Republic. Only in the last week or two have the number of people supporting impeachment hearings (not necessarily the actual impeachment) risen above 50%.

These threats may be as clear as day to us, but most people are unwilling -- as yet -- to see it that way. Since there are punishing political and economic threats inherent in any impeachment action, most people are hesitant to support it. That's what got the GOP Impeachment team whacked over Clinton's case. If we were to make the definitive push for impeachment NOW, we would fail, and it would be impossible to impeach Bush in the future.

The time to hit him is when his popularity is around 20%, his cronies are starting to go to prison, and when we have a dozen or more specific criminal counts with which to charge him. In other words, keep our powder dry, and then have at him at the most opportune moment. Our policy ought to be that, when the time comes, we go for a quick, efficient, unequivocal "decapitation" -- political, legal, and cultural. Even for the rank-and-file GOP, it should be more of a quick amputation than a long, slow tourniquet applied to a painful, malodorous, gangrenous limb. For that to happen, we need planning, support, and The Law. And if I know Bush, we will be in that position soon enough.

I, too, am eager to see Bush consigned to the trashbin of history, but I want the deed to be decisive. There must be no half-way measures that will allow Team Bush to re-constitute itself like some monster from a Japanese sci-fi epic. Is there any doubt that if we slip, Team Bush will strike back with historically unprecedented ferocity?

When the gavel comes down, it must be a finality, not a formality.

Impeachment, conviction, and removal of a sitting President is the second most potentially destructive event that can happen to our nation -- second only to revolution. In the matter of impeachment, when the time comes, we can't hesitate, we can't flinch, we can't hold back. We must make sure that the public, the elites, the law, and the body of evidence are all with us -- and commit ourself, as a democratic republic, to the deed.

We still have not made enough of a case -- but only a small fraction of Bush's actions have come to light. If that seems discouraging, also keep in mind, most of Team Bush's actions which are clearly illegal have only emerged since late autumn. The scenario has only begun to evolve; the climax will arrive quickly enough.

What should we do? There is plenty of work yet to be done.

Keep digging! Dig in!

16. Mr. Bear - I highly respect all your opinions, but
how could an intelligent emotional man like McCain down deep have even one ounce of respect for Bush after the Roveboating he suffered in South Carolina. I've always felt he hates * with a passion and only pays lip service and party-service to him out of necessity for his political future. (The pik of them hugging over his birthday cake makes me wanna upchuk).
