Y'all watching this clip of the hearing with the AT&T and Specter?
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 07:27 PM by SeattleGirl
(On Countdown) Wow! Specter was pissed, and the AT&T dude was being totally evasive, and would not answer the freaking question about whether his company provided information to the government. "We follow the law" he says. Specter did NOT take kindly to that.

What the hell else is next? Now they are looking at our bank records, too, AND THE BANKS DIDN'T KNOW IT.

3. I didn't catch when that hearing occurred
Was it recently? Even after Arlen caved to DeadEye Dick and said they could avoid a confrontation over the NSA program? Did Specter actually recover his spine and decide once again to stand up to these jokers?

7. It was a regular hearing meant to review a merger (ATT and BellSouth)...
but Specter brought up the question anyway.

but I'm sure glad Specter asked the question.

Spector Threatening To "Lay Down The Guantlet" AGAIN... Updated at 12:51 PM

Specter to grill officials on Bush ignoring laws

By Andy Sullivan
Reuters
Wednesday, June 21, 2006; 6:06 PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration will have to explain why it thinks it can ignore or overrule laws passed by Congress in a hearing next week, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said on Wednesday.

Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, said he hoped to force the Bush administration to reduce its use of "signing statements" -- memos that reserve the right to ignore laws if the president thinks they impinge on his authority.

"Our legislation doesn't amount to anything if the president can say, 'My constitutional authority supersedes the statute.' And I think we've got to lay down the gauntlet and challenge him on it," Specter said in a telephone interview.

A Justice Department official is scheduled to testify at a hearing on signing statements next Tuesday, Specter said.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who had lunch with Specter on Wednesday, will face questions about the presidential memos when he appears before the committee on July 18 to discuss the National Security Agency's domestic spying program.

And their arrogance is what annoys me the most! If they needed to get something done, why not go through proper channels? Oh, I know, 'cause it's illegal!

Seems like a lot of these CEO types can come testify before Congress, and yet not have to do it under oath. They are "above it all", don't you know? (At least in their minds -- in my mind, they are beneath contempt.)

watching this reminded me about a Bell south service call (trying to sell customers stuff ) or survey, or small business services. Since I get these 3 or 4 times a month from them, Ihave some fun, I smarted off and said something smart about giving my records up. he said' "That's not true sir.", "You can't believe everything you read." " Where did you here that." Every big company I have to dobusiness with BLOWS!

He is, as Jack Cafferty noted not so long ago, "another cowardly Republican worm". I expect he's just trying to put on a particularly spicy show this time and try to rehabilitate his image.
