I had that dream again, the one where
I'm walking down a busy street at night,
and I hear that Old song coming from
a window above, the lilting, happy song,
When you're smilin', keep on smilin'
The whole world smiles with you
And when you're laughin', keep on laughin'
The sun comes shinin' through,
Then I spot Louie himself from within the crowd
and as he approaches I notice he's slumped a bit,
Staring down at his feet, and he was moving slow,
And I said, "Hey Satch! Long time no see! Que Pasa?
and our eyes met for an instant and he looked
back down at his old brown shoes, and I did not
see his smile, I did not see his ambassador's horn
tucked under his arm, just his hands in his pockets,
and as he faded into the rainy night I heard,
But when you're cryin', you bring on the rain
So stop your frownin', be happy again
Cause when you're smilin', keep on smilin'
The whole world smiles with you
Now when you're cryin', you bring on the rain
So stop that sighin', be happy again
Cause when you're smilin', just keep on smilin'
And the whole world gonna smile with,
The great big world will smile with,
The whole wide world will smile with you.
I kept walking as the song faded from that
darkened window above, and I looked at the
many faces lit only by the electric lights,
and I saw no smiling, no expressions at all,
just faces, some going east, some west,
no one was laughing, and the sun didn't
come shining through.
