What did our invasion of Iraq get us? The election of a whackjob in Iran who won 62% of the vote on an intensly anti-Amerian platform. Democrats and Republicans have begun using language similar to that used in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. Take Sen. Feinstein this morning, who said she "
think it's a stretch to say that, if the Iranians had a nuclear missile, that this president might well use it against Israel." She concurred with Sen. McCain that the situation with Iran is...wait for it...a "serious" threat, and that military options are on the table. Now, I know that neither Feinstein nor McCain nor, I'd say, any member of Congress wants to go to war. Like all of us, they want to avoid war at any cost. But can we at least finish one war before we start talking about the possibility of another one?
You'd think that, given the clusterfuck that Iraq was from pre-invasion until, oh, this very moment, our leaders and the media would be a little more cautious about starting with the war rhetoric. I'm sure many of you, like me, have had this thought over the last couple weeks as the media has pounced on the Iran bandwagon: "Oh, shit. Here we go again."
How easy it will be for the media to sell a war this time around! They can use the same script from Iraq, just replace that "q" with an "n" and take it from top all over again. Judy Miller is out of commission, though, so the government will have to find another conduit for its propaganda. No problem, the Washinton Post of late seems up to the task.
Cheney's already perfectly on cue, declaring it's "pretty clear" Iran is trying to build nukes. And they've popped in the same tape to feed into Bush's ear, because he recently said Iran was a "grave threat."
