Gary Hart calls out WaPo for its recent spin for Bush and against Kerry.

The Post applauded President Bush’s courage in continuing an open-ended commitment to an American military presence in Iraq and disparaged what it termed political expediency on the part of Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) in calling for a reasonable timetable for phased withdrawal of our forces <”A Boost From Mr. Bush,” editorial, June 14>.

Mr. Bush’s political capital is waning because he misled Congress and the American people, because we have experienced 21,000 American casualties as a result, because a mere 23 percent of the world’s people respect our nation, because he has no strategy worth the title, and because he is responsible for a military and foreign policy disaster. To “stay” an undefined and unlimited “course” may demonstrate many things but it does not demonstrate courage.

Having acknowledged the error in trusting Mr. Bush’s arguments for war, Mr. Kerry has demonstrated the real courage in proposing a realistic plan to extricate our troops from a nation whose people no longer want us there and which is now capable of achieving democracy on its own.

GARY HART
Kittredge, Colo.
The writer, a Democrat, was a U.S. senator from Colorado from 1975 to 1986.

18. Now we need dozens more Democrats like him.
Instead, we have some Dems actually repeating WH talking points against Kerry and Murtha's plans.

2. Thanks Senator
To stay an unlimited and undefined course does not demonstrate courage. Amen. It also does not demonstrate any knowledge of warfare or terrorism; just politics. Kids dying because of politics. "Conservatives" should be very proud.

4. I think it's important that Hart notes Bush's poll troubles are ENTIRELY
of his own making because of his own lies and that it effects the rest of the world's perceptuns which endangers our real national security.

We need an HONEST GOVERNMENT.

3. Thanks, Mr. Hart, for pointing out the obvious. The WaPo needs
to get a clue and stop kowtowing to this admin.

Except for the 8 years that Clinton was in office - then they worked for the RNC.

6. Nice to see there are some real mean left on this planet besides JK.
And it's great to have some good news for my Monday morning. Governor Asshole in Louisiana is seriously pairing it down at the moment.

9. I do wonder why other Democrats who want withdrawal aren't taking on this
battle with Kerry and Murtha. It would benefit the issue if MORE would speak up WITH them and show some united front.

20. Yeah. Sigh.
I still love my party, but sometimes they make it very hard to collectively respect them.

10. I like Gary Heart...
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 10:26 AM by Hubert Flottz
What's realy odd is that I know some hard core, life long, republicans who like Gary Heart too. It scared me, when I found out that the kkkonservatives agreed with me on something. It may be because the stroke I had awhile back messed up my brain?

11. Hart's intellect has to be respected - Hart and Rudman worked their butts
off for two and a half years studying global terrorism and how it would effect this country's security.

The Hart-Rudman Report on Global Terror was handed to George Bush on Jan 30, 2001, ans Bush refused to read it.

A President Clinton, Gore or Kerry would have READ the report that same day and worked to implement its urgent proposals for Homeland Security.

In other words - with an alert government and an alert citizenry it would have been very unlikely that a 9-11 would have even happened.

12. I don't think the attack on 9/11 would have taken place if Gore
had been allowed to take the job he won in 2000.

13. Exactly - The Hart-Rudman report would've been handed to a REAL president
concerned for the nation's security.

8. Great comments from former Sen. Hart. Now others, like us should
back him up!! I am sending a letter to the editor and even if it doesn't get published they will know I support Murtha, Kerry and Hart.

17. Isn't it amazing that WaPo spins BUSH into a courageous figure while
KERRY gets called as a politician. Kerry, who took on the most unpopular battles in politics for three decades against GWBush - a political STRATEGIST and operative for three decades.
