Is global warming denial morally equivalent to Holocaust denial?
I am not a scientist, so I can't give an informed opinion as to the technical issues inolved in the global warming debate. I am trained as an historian, though, and I have researched the Holocaust denial "issue" more than I've sometimes thought my sanity could endure, and I have noticed a similar way of thinking in those who deny global warming. The same types of "arguments", the same emotional undercurrents, the same bizarre sense of what the word "logic" means...the same insistence that there actually is something to "debate" about... What the hell is wrong with our society, that something that seems to be akin to Holocause denial is taken seriously, encouraged by one of our major parties and the so-called "media"? And isn't there *one* politician willing to stand up and make this analogy explicit, given the stakes for us all, and our descendants? Al Gore? Here's a chance for a *real* Profile in Courage...

1. Actually it's worse. I lost relatives in the Holocaust but it
did not mean the potential end of all civilization. I think these people really believe they can bring on the rapture.

2. That 's exactly it, WHD
That's how I feel.

Holocaust denial is very repugnant, but believing such doesn't change that history. It just is.

OTOH, we have the opportunity to change our future if we understand and accept global warming.

4. I got to shake Al Gore's hand a couple of weeks ago when
he spoke here in Houston. He is truly a hero and I told him so. We must do everything we can to support his efforts.

3. It's a different kind of "denial".
In one case, people are denying an actual historical fact from the past. In the other, they are denying the validity of a prediction about the future.

Depite the difference, both attitudes appear to stem from ignorance.

5. I read somewhere that the temperature on mars has also gone up
I am not saying that man does not contribute to fucking up this planets climate, just that we all have to be aware of hubris in thinking that humans are outside of nature. Did you ever think that having 6,000,000,000 people on this planet might be part of the problem. It is always easy to say that it is some one else who fuck things up and not say that we all are active in having a effect on our world. Until we start working with the "evil" corporations and republicans to find ways to work with in nature be a part of it nothing will change. Al Gore has said that climate change is not a partisan issue but one for all parties to work on together. So comparing Holocaust denial to a lack of understanding about climate change is not going to help
there is no us and them here. Until we all including republicans right wing left wing... start working together to live in harmony whit nature nothing will change. If some one does not yet see how our actions have an effect on the would around us then attacking them will not help.
