My daughter's encounter with a Right-wing fundamentalist today
Our Democratic club built a float for a local festival, the parade was this morning. We spent many hours working on this float over the last few weeks.
We constructed a 7 x 13 foot flag and many of the candidates or representatives for the candidates showed up to walk in the parade with us.

Before the parade we were all lined up with floats from the various organizations in town. The republicans did not have anything, but the Democrats made a very strong presence. All the churches seemed to have a float.

My daughter was sitting on the edge of the float waiting for the parade to start when a woman from the church we attend walked up and asked her what she was doing over here. Her response was that she help build the float. The fundie responded with "Did you know this was the Democrats?" My daughter looked her square in the eye and said "Do you think I didn't know that?"

The crowd was quite taken by the flag and most response's were positive, a few ugly comments to which I replied, "Why do you hate America?"

The float was a huge attraction before and after the parade with photographers, some people even had their kids picture take with it.

1. That's great.
Never let them forget that it's our flag too. The Red stands for the blood shed for our country and the original blood shed was that of liberals seeking to be free of tyranny.

3. The American Taliban are so out of touch
I am glad your daughter gave her a smart alec answer back. I wonder if these people actually read the bible or if they just attend church to get brainwashed.

5. I think that she thought that because we go to church that we surely
were repukes.
I have had other occasions where "some" in the church have implied that you have to be republican if you are Christian.

These people truly are the kool-aid drinkers.

have a moment's doubt or reflection?

8. Well, see she's right, because to be a Christian you have to be greedy
and corrupt and hate the poor and and want only to make your own immediate family better off and enjoy bombing brown people. Those are the values Jesus espoused.

:sarcasm:

how can you be a member of our church and vote republican.

11. I am glad you had fun
and built that float, sounds like a good time. But the question to your daughter by a fellow church member is truly a sad commentary on the state of our country right now.

13. it's sad when the kids are brighter than the adults
but that is the situation we are in.

Good for your daughter for her comeback. You raised her right. And cool that the Dems had such a big presence. Make that church lady slither away like the snake she and the rest of the Repukes are.

16. The kids are almost always smarter than the adults:
the kids may have less experience and less practice, but they've also been subjected to less propaganda -- and they're always in learning mode

14. Our Democratic group marched in parades in 2004, and were loudly booed!
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 02:06 PM by gauguin57
I live in a VERY red area of blue Pennsylvania (VERY RED!) We marched in three parades during the late summer/early fall of 2004. We were just walking behind our county Democratic banner (or riding a float with an Uncle Sam statue on it) -- not chanting, not giving out literature, just walking -- and we got booed VERY LOUDLY for a solid hour each time. Little kids would run into the street to give us the thumbs-down and yell "boooooo!" right in our faces. A little scary at times, to live in America under such conditions.

And then all those booing jackasses went into the voting booth and re-selected the man who is DESTROYING our country!

What a world!

You just keep on keeping on, liberal N proud!!!!!

17. Not really, there are a several reasons
Two of which are:
- I want to educate a few fundies, let them know that Democrats can be Christian too. If one asks about the flag, I will tell them that this year we are taking back the flag and next year we will be coming after the cross.
- The whole church is not like this woman, as near as I can tell, only half of them are as crazy as this woman. But I don't usually associate politics with religion unlike the right wing fundies.

There are two ministers in the church and from what I can tell, the one leans toward the moderate side and the other idolizes bu$h. I avoid conversations with him that might lead to a confrontation.

22. I've thought about my own church;
Sometimes it seems a little too conservative for me; but then again, I think we have a greater proportion of Democrats than the general population, so maybe we're not doing too bad.

25. Yay for your daughter!
:D

Its ironic that republicans think that THEY'RE the only ones that can be Christian, but in reality, what they belive strays drastically from Jesus's teachings ("love your neighbor", etc)
