Winning the Race: Beyond the Crisis in Black America
John McWhorter

In the sequal to 2000's "Losing the Race," author John McWhorter urges African Americans to acknowledge what he describes as the new racial realities of America. This event was hosted by the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC.

John McWhorter is the author of "Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America," "The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language," "Authentically Black: Essays for the Black Silent Majority" and "Doing Our Own Thing: The Degradation of Language and Music and Why We Should, Like, Care." On Sunday, June 18 at 3:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The War for Korea, 1945-1950: A House Burning
Allan Millett

Military historian Allan Millett explains that the basis for the Korean War actually goes back as far as 1910 when Korea was under Japanese rule. This is the topic of his new book, "The War for Korea, 1945-1960: A House Burning." In it, Mr. Millett makes the case that the Marxist-Leninists and the Nationalist-capitalists each sought to control the country with political and military support from foreign powers. The author writes that during the period leading up to the U.S. involvement in the Korean War, thousands of Koreans had already been killed through terrorism and guerrilla warfare, ensuring the split between the two sides.

Allan Millett has written numerous books including "The History of the United States Marine Corps" and "Mao's Generals Remember Korea." Mr. Millett is a military history professor at Ohio State University until 2006, when he takes over as director of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans.

The book, first published in 1994, began as a collection of essays she wrote when she was first learning how to speak English. The author describes her childhood under the rule of Mao Zedong and recounts how her involvement in propoganda films produced by the ruler's wife, Madame Mao, resulted in her denouncement across the country. During her presentation, she is joined by her daughter, Lauryann Jiang, for a dance routine and dramatic performance. This event was hosted by Pomona College in Claremont, California.

Anchee Min is the author of "Becoming Madame Mao," "Wild Ginger" and "Empress Orchid : A Novel." She was born in Shanghai and was sent to a labor camp at the age of seventeen where she was discovered by talent scouts. Ms. Min worked as an actress at the Shanghai Film Studio and came to the United States in 1984.

Romancing Opiates: Pharmacological Lies and the Addiction Bureaucracy
Theodore Dalrymple

Theodore Dalrymple, a.k.a Anthony Daniels, discusses his latest book"Romancing Opiates." In a presentation held at the Manhattan Institute in New York, Mr. Dalrymple sheds light on the myths and realities surrounding modern drug use. As a psychiatrist specializing in drug overdoses and as a prison doctor, he describes clinical evidence that show addiction is not a disease. Mr. Dalrymple argues that withdrawl from opiates is not a serious medical condition but a trivial experience. He tries to prove that criminality causes addiction more often than addiction causes criminality.

Anthony Daniels, a retired doctor and psychiatrist who practiced in a British inner-city hospital and prison, is also known as "Theodore Dalrymple". He uses the pen name "Theodore Dalrymple" in most of his written works. He writes for the London Spectator and National Review. Currently, Mr. Daniels is the Dietrich Weismann fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor to the City Journal.

Londonistan
Melanie Phillips

Melanie Phillips argues that Britain has become overly tolerant of the radical Islamicists who live there, a subject she takes up in her new book, "Londonistan." Ms. Phillips says that in an effort to protect minority rights, the British government has let those who wish to destroy Western society live freely within its borders and preach whatever they wish. She suggests that immigrants be required to accept basic norms of British society before they are allowed to live there and explains why she thinks that the problem is not getting the attention that it deserves. The event was hosted by the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC.

Melanie Phillips, journalist and columnist for the London Daily Mail, is the author of "The Ascent of Woman: A History of the Suffragette Movement" and "All Must Have Prizes." For more on Ms. Phillips and her work, visit www.melaniephillips.com.

The Storm: What Went Wrong and Why During Hurricane Katrina -- The Inside Story from One Louisiana Scientist
Ivor van Heerden

Ivor van Heerden talks about his and his colleagues' efforts to protect New Orleans against hurricanes prior to 2005 and their investigation into the cause of the flooding in the city after Hurricane Katrina hit in September 2005. Mr. van Heerden argues that state and federal officials largely ignored plans that would have protected the city and then tried to jam up scientific investigations into the cause, forcing him and other scientists to go directly to the media. He says that the condition of the levies in New Orleans are still poor, leaving New Orleans vulnerable as the next hurricane season approaches. The talk was hosted by Octavia Books in New Orleans.

Ivor van Heerden, who teaches civil and environmental engineering at Louisiana State University, is cofounder and deputy director of the LSU Hurricane Center (www.hurricane.lsu.edu) and director of the Center for the Study of Public Health Impacts of Hurricanes.
