We might as well face it. No matter what we do, there are those we cannot and will not reach. We stand upon opposite sides of an enormous chasm, and the wind that whistles through it steals our words before it can reach the other side.
They'll never understand us. When WE say "freedom," to them it sounds like "anarchy." When THEY say "freedom" it sounds to us like "tyranny." We have no common ground on which to stand. The ideological gap is simply too great.
The rest of America is caught in the middle, staring up from the chasm of ignorance trying to make out the words-as-weapons fired from one side of the chasm to the other, but only able to make out the sounds that are yelled the loudest. A great many of them would stand with us, if they could only be led to see the things that we see--the dangers that face us all.
We are called the "fringe" left, yet we're only "fringe" in the aspect that we, among all the non-elite, are informed and strive to rise our voices loud enough to be heard above the shouting of the right.
We will never win over those who understand different definitions of America's virtues and vices than we do. We're not even speaking the same language.
America faces its gravest threat in these times, and we will never win by trying to communicate with, or out-shout, the right. We will only be able to do it one day at a time, one person at a time. By reaching out and connecting with others to affect change. It's the only option we have. Trying to out-shout the megaphone wielding assholes isn't going to do anything except steal our breath when we need it most.
