Before discussing modern political references to birds of prey,
it is important to understand the history of this icon.

THE EAGLE: Is it a bird of prey or bird of pray?
To early pagans, the Eagle symbolized Jupiter, a god of moral law and punisher of the guilty. The sacred Eagle was believed to carry pagan prayers from the Earth to Heaven. In 102 B.C. the Roman Consul Marius decreed that Eagles be displayed in all provinces to show the power Imperial Rome. When Herod the Great built the Second Temple in 20 B.C. Jews became outraged, after he mounted a Roman Eagle over the gate. When Herod died, his opponents tore down the eagle icon. Napoleon also used an eagle, derived from ancient Roman symbolism. On June 20 in 1782, the United States adopted the American Bald Eagle, with wings displayed, as an icon on the Great Seal.

In nature, eagles are opportunistic and often feed on carrion, unlike hawks that generally take live prey. Certainly, as early Roman soldiers witnessed eagles devouring the rotting bloated corpses of their enemies and allies, they met the true winners in any war. Today is no different. Your representatives in Washington DC, like scavengers of old, are feeding of the carnage of war but they are not eagles or Chicken Hawks. "Chicken-hawk" is indeed a cute name but there is nothing cute or noble about the results of war.
