MY city's smarter than YOOOUURRR city....
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 07:18 PM by BlooInBloo

Just imagine if I was smart AND motivated - then I'd reformat the mf table!

If I was motivated, I'd also look at the proportion of red/blue mayors, representatives, and the like for these areas. Maybe I still will.

http://www.bizjournals.com/specials/pages/12.html

EDIT: GODDAMNSONOFAMOTHERFUCKINGBITCH!!! How do I format this mf table? In "edit" mode it looks just fine - but then all the whitespace is stripped when I save it. And apparently you can't put html tables in here. GRRRRRR!

EDIT2: fuck the table. Here's a snapshot. Sheesh.

1. The hilarious thing about Seattle is that
our mayor doesn't have a college degree. He dropped out to go into politics.

4. The real surprise for me is Albuquerque
Don't get me wrong -- I love New Mexico but I don't think it has an industry that attracts very highly educated people. Seattle has both Microsoft and Boeing.
Maybe you need to be highly educated to spell Albuquerque right and that's why the others weren't counted. How's that for a theory?

Kirtland AFB

Lots of brain power there.

(And as far as the rest of NM goes, there's Los Alamos; more PhDs per sq mile than anywhere else in the country)

Just bugs me that they call it brainpower when it's a simple poll of how many are college educated.

America's brainpower: methodology
bizjournals.com - June 12, 2006

Bizjournals.com has devised a formula to rate the collective brainpower of any U.S. community,
based on the educational attainment of its residents.

Here's how it works:

Categories: Communities have been divided into three categories, depending on the number
of adults who were at least 25 years old as of 2000.

Source: All raw data used in this study were generated by the latest federal census,
which was conducted in 2000 and reported in 2003. The census remains the most recent
and comprehensive source of statistics on educational attainment at the community level.

Scoring: Bizjournals.com has assigned point totals to six levels of educational attainment,
as follows:

* Not a high school graduate (0 points)
* High school graduate (20 points)
* Attended some college, but no degree (40 points)
* Associate degree (60 points)
* Bachelor's degree (80 points)
* Graduate or professional degree (100 points)

--------------

I know a lot of people who have degree's but are dumber than a box of rocks!

Case in point:

34. This is an exchange between a friend from NY, who e-mailed me about this:
Friend's e-mail:

ouch:

The study found that Miami has the lowest brainpower of any large community. Just 16 percent of Miami's adults have earned bachelor's degrees, which is 31 percentage points behind Seattle's rate.

My response:

Well, I think it is a cheapshot to say we have low "brainpower" when they are clearly referring to education. We've all met ignorant idiots with college degrees as well as highly intelligent people with no education.

Miami is a poor city where more than 50 percent of its residents are immigrants who came here to improve their lives. Most have to work several jobs and don't exactly have time or money to pursue a higher education.

In other studies I've seen, Miami has the highest rate of Hispanics with colllege degrees or something to that effect. Maybe it was the highest rate of children of immigrants enrolled in college.

Also, Miami-Dade College, a four-year college that used to be a two-year community college called Miami-Dade Community College (where I got my associate degree), has the largest student enrollment in the country, I recently read.

Having said all that, you would think that a guy like me with a bachelor degree and fluent in two languages would have a much easier time getting job assignments if I'm part of the educated 16 percent.

The other problem down here is our public education system sucks. It really does not prepare anyone for college. Nor does it motivate students to pursue higher education. It was bad when I was in school and it's even worse now. And for that, I blame Jeb.

Friend's resopnse:

right on! you might want to forward your excellent letter to those putos who commissioned the 'study.'

... elsewhere, then RETURN to Seattle...

There's all types....

Do you think that most people with degrees in S.F. actually GOT their degrees in S.F.? That would shock the hell outta me... Just sayin - I don't think the phenomenon you point out is by a far stretch unique to Seattle.

19. I meant in Washington, not Seattle proper
I would venture to guess that a higher percentage of people who live in San Francisco were educated in California than people in Seattle were in Washington. Of course, Washington doesn't seem to be very full of colleges; California has LOTS. I'm originally from Michigan, which also has a lot of schools. Don't get me wrong - I like it that Seattle is educated; that's why it's liberal and why I can belong to two functioning book clubs.
