Microsoft to issue 12 patches for security flaws on Tuesday, 6/13
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13274606/

SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp. plans to issue a dozen security alerts Tuesday — some carrying the highest risk rating of critical — as part of a monthly security update to fix flaws in its software.

Nine of the patches relate to its Windows operating system, two address problems in its Microsoft Office productivity software and the other is for the company's Exchange e-mail server software, Microsoft said on its Web site.

Microsoft, which makes the Windows operating system that runs on 90 percent of the world's computers, will issue patches to fix the problems as part of its monthly security bulletin. (MSNBC is a Microsoft - NBC joint venture.)

The world's biggest software maker defines a flaw as "critical" when the vulnerability could allow a damaging Internet worm to replicate without the user doing anything to the machine.

5. Yep, that was pretty cool...
...meanwhile, Microsoft readies its new OS, which will probably be shiny and awesome and as bug-ridden and vulnerable as all of the previous ones.

6. Why, oh why do people put up with this garbage? If I had to use Windows on
the net, I wouldn't even bother.

7. at what point tdo the repairs and patches exceed their original product?
disclaimer, I hate windows. Use it under protest. Do very very well with apple. But some clients demand I run their proprietary shit, so I have both a windows machine AND run softPC on one of my macs.

I have lost count how many patches, fixes, emergencies and other crap I have dealt with - not to mention the problems that patches cause on the proprietary software.

I HATE windows.

12. Very few of the Windows vulnerabilities have been exploited
Most of them have been found by Microsoft, then disclosed and patched before anyone has a chance to exploit them.

8. My wife works in the legal profession and from the time the hills
first turned green the standard office suite was Corel, ie Word Perfect. It's faster, more versatile and better suited to what legal professionals do. It interprets Word files and can convert most wpd files to doc files.

Her company just changed over to Microsoft Office. Not enough people know what Corel is and it was easier and less expensive to make the change than to spend IT time helping customers.

13. OMG is she in for a fun time. I worked in IT, primarily in the legal
profession, for many years and M$ Word is an absolute nightmare for legal documents. Redlining is just one issue that Word just can't handle, and as you know, there cannot be any mistakes.

My sympathies - Greyhound

automated forms? screw MS.

crashing and losing data - just because you try to save a work in progress? SCREW MS.
(just recalling some of my favorite moments with Word)
