Who likes turtles?
I always had a thing for them.. now I make 'em.. sure is fun!

But we don't need a president who behaves like one.. by sticking his head back in his shell, and hiding from the world's dissent.

36. I tried turtle soup once.
It was pretty good. I only had a few spoonfuls. It weirded me out that I was eating a turtle. I realized that I wouldn't be able to kill a turtle myself so I stopped eating it. Hell, I've rescued a few snappers crossing the road before. It's just bizarre to rescue those snappers and then eat one in soup.

7. I'm a turtle lover. Whenever I see a turtle in the road I stop & cross it
Just crossed a beauty the other day on a country highway near me. When I picked it up, though, it peed all over me because it was scared.

I've crossed many huge snapping turtles, too, over the years. With them, you have to use extreme caution. You can't pick them up by the side of the shell like other turtles because their neck is so long they can actually turn their head along the side of their shell far enough to reach your hand. The only way, believe it or not, to pick one up is to pick it up by the tail and hold it far from your legs as you cross it. I read in a book once that that's the safest way to do it. I always hold it as close to the ground as possible just in case the tail breaks, but that's never happened yet, thank goodness.

Gotta be careful not to get run over by a car, too, of course, but the turtles need to be crossed because there are some real assholes who will go out of their way to crush them. Turtles are really cool, almost as cool as snakes.

9. Turtles, snakes, bears, bobcats, mink, eagles, you name it, even rednecks
New York is a big state. The wildlife around my area of the state, northern NY, is abundant.

BTW, you do have turtles in many parts of your state. Go here and click on the various turtles to see the range of them in Arizona.

37. Yeah, I'm in NJ and we get all those things.
The other day there was a flock of wild turkeys in the yard pecking around the rabbits' playpen. The turkeys totally ignored the rabbits and the rabbits were just fascinated by the weird creatures eating the spilled seed by the pen.

The other night I heard coyotes. That was pretty cool.

24. God, that brings back fond memories of my youth. When a bunch
of us would go driving all over Texas. When someone saw a turtle trying to cross the road, they would yell "TURTLE", slam on the brakes and whoever was riding shotgun would jump out of the car, race to the turtle and help him across the road before either of them got run over. It was really fun and you felt so good when you got him across the road. Good for you for keeping this going.

32. I used to do that too!
When I still lived in Georgia I did that a lot. I used to think the poor things just got overcome by the heat and stopped in the middle of the road for a rest, and I couldn't stand the thought of them getting run over.

On one memorable occasion, I was heading to a nearby lake recreational area to go swimming and thought that, instead of taking the turtle across the road, I'd take him to the lake so he'd be near water. I plopped the turtle in the front passenger seat and started driving, and I hadn't travelled more than about a hundred yards when the turtle's head popped out of its shell and it started hissing at me. Seems I had picked up a snapping turtle and he wasn't happy with the situation at all. He kept trying to lunge at me (inasmuch as a turtle can lunge) but the car's movement made him unsteady and his little feet kept churning away without going anywhere.

I love turtles but I sure was glad to get that one out of my car.

35. That's funny. I never thought of putting the turtles in the car and
taking them with me. lol Isn't it funny that we think we're the only ones who ever do something like help a turtle across the road. I'm glad to know there are other people who do the same thing. I remember one turtle who I helped across the road and I no sooner got him safely to the other side than he turned around and started back across the road, so I picked him up again and took him really far into the brush. Risked my life for that dumb shit. ha

41. I know!
After my experience with the snapping turtle, it occurred to me that the turtles might be thinking (in their little turtle kinda way) "WTF is going on here". It still didn't stop me moving them out of the road though. A squashed turtle isn't a pretty sight.

I think about that now sometimes when I watch animal documentaries on the BBC - they film but do not interfere to save an animal, ever, even if it means it dies because of it. In just one instance earlier this year, they filmed a baby African elephant going the wrong way when it was attempting to follow its mother. The film crew could have turned the baby around in the right direction but didn't, leaving the young elephant to get more and more lost and die. It was heartbreaking.

If I saved even one turtle, then I'm happy with how stupid I looked jumping out of my car moving them across the road.

Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 01:29 PM by wryter2000
We had alligator lizards in the Oakland hills. They're such cute creatures. In my new neighborhood we have the most adorable little newts. Not reptiles, but I guess they count as herps.

On edit: I'd love to encounter a rubber boa. They're quite friendly. A friend of mine found one in the country around here somewhere and adopted it.

17. I'm too chicken to breed my snakes
I've heard too many stories about snakes getting egg bound and then babies that are born with deformities or refuse to eat. I don't want to put my babies through that. Especially my girl snake. She's my princess, and I'd hate to do anything that would hurt her.

Still, I adore baby snakeys. They're so cute! My male came to me as a baby. He wasn't much bigger than a worm, but the pattern of his scales was perfect. What a little miracle.

22. It's no biggie
Keep the female fattened up and proprely warm and binding won't occur. I've never had deformed babies but some species can be a real pain in the ass to get started feeding, I've lost some neonate jungle carpet pythons due to non-feeding.

On the other hand babies are a lot of work. Breeding also takes a lot out of females, one bred yearly from maturity won't get as big as a male and likely not live as long either. There's also the issue of disposing of the animal, unless you live in a large, good reptile market(I don't) it can be hard to get a decent price for your critters, the offers can be an insult to your effort and the snake. Wholesalers don't pay squat.

18. Turtles are pretty neat and I had to pick one up that was in the road
the other day so it wouldn't get squished. I placed it on the side of the road where there's a pond.

I used to have a red-earred but I relinquished him to my ex-boyfriend over 25 years ago. Just as well, I didn't have the heart to feed him live goldfish.

PS...how do you make them? Or do you make chocolate turtles???

I've got a Mississippi Mud Turtle that I obtained in 1968, she was mature then, she's pretty feeble now. Also have a Chiapan Musk Turtle(Starotypus salvanii) which I hatched on the Ides of March, 1974.

I honor your responsible custody of these "so excellent fishes".

34. Was it a turtle or a tortoise?
Mine is an actual water turtle.

He lives in an aquarium next to a window. And he seems to do well there.

He is pretty tame. He comes up to the side of the tank and begs for food and follows me around.

His name is Summer. I like him a lot.

30. I had a turtle when I was a kid & he lived in our small suburban yard
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 09:09 AM by TheGoldenRule
my older brother teased me because my dog-a miniature poodle-would eat the turtles poop-or was it the other way around?! Can't remember now! LOL! :D

My kid LOVES animals and while I am deathly afraid of snakes, I like turtles and did consider buying a turtle for my kid, but didn't because the one at the store cost about 100 bucks which was pricey IMO. Also, I hate to say it but we have a pretty flower garden-overgrown though it is-and I dread the thought of the turtle mowing through it, eating all my lavender, herbs, roses, etc. :spank:

I would get one if I could be sure the turtle would behave himself and eat only store bought turtle food...
