Study: Divorce rate higher among Fundies and Southerners
Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups, and for Atheists and Agnostics.

And if I recall correctly, the state with the lowest divorce rate is Massachusetts. The Southern states have the highest divorce rates.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

And a few more snips....

Donald Hughes, author of The Divorce Reality, said: "In the churches, people have a superstitious view that Christianity will keep them from divorce, but they are subject to the same problems as everyone else, and they include a lack of relationship skills. ...Just being born again is not a rabbit's foot." Hughes claim that 90% of divorces among born-again couples occur after they have been "saved."

Ron Barrier, Spokesperson for American Atheists remarked on these findings with some rather caustic comments against organized religion. He said: "These findings confirm what I have been saying these last five years. Since Atheist ethics are of a higher caliber than religious morals, it stands to reason that our families would be dedicated more to each other than to some invisible monitor in the sky. With Atheism, women and men are equally responsible for a healthy marriage. There is no room in Atheist ethics for the type of 'submissive' nonsense preached by Baptists and other Christian and/or Jewish groups. Atheists reject, and rightly so, the primitive patriarchal attitudes so prevalent in many religions with respect to marriage."

The data showed that the highest divorce rates were found in the Bible Belt. "Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Oklahoma round out the Top Five in frequency of divorce...the divorce rates in these conservative states are roughly 50 percent above the national average" of 4.2/1000 people.

8. Perhaps an amendment banning marriage between Christians is in....
order in order to SAVE marriage. The divorce rate would plunge, aferall.

12. I've been saying for a few years that DIVORCE should be banned.
Then these types will kill each other off since they can't get divorced! Problem solved.

The most liberal state (Massachusetts) has the least. The media doesn't talk about that.

6. You get married too young, it's more likely you're doing it
for the wrong reasons and with the wrong person. One of my dearest friends married a nice Southern girl in a nice Southern town just days after his 22nd birthday. It lasted a while, but it ended and it didn't end well.

10. I hope you're not implying that us nice Southern girls
aren't so nice.

I'm a sweetie.

And, I love, love, love my Yankee husband.

7. Jesus spoke directly to the issue of divorce
Hint: He didn't like it. I can't recall the exact passage, but it's summed up well in Matthew, perhaps 10.

Odd, that. Divorce ok amongst fundies, same sex unions not.

Disclaimer, I've been divorced, so if you want to flame, flame for something else.

9. Hughes claim...
"that 90% of divorces among born-again couples occur after they have been "saved."

Having met more than a few people who've been born again, I think there is a big hole in their lives they expect to be filled with Jesus' love. For some, the hole remains because there are still giant questions about themselves that remain unanswered - and because their lives are now in Jesus' hands they don't look for other answers.

I think these couples decide the problem with their marriage is because Jesus doesn't live within them. And even after he moves in the problems remain and they decide to chuck it all.

At least they tried to find some answer to saving their marriage. Some people, even close friends of mine, have done less to save their relationships.

13. Amen brother. There are four in my office and they are the worst
hypocrites I ever met.

Two of the three proclaim to be hard-working Christians and they are neither. The third is worse - she's the office snoop. Reading through your emails, checking the boss' voice mail in early AM, rooting through garbage cans. And she shares her gossip with the other two.

And the fourth is a minister in some church so secretive he won't tell us its name. He's a bigot and a misogynist and loves dumbya.

God forbid you say anything out of line though - the shit hits the holy fan. Like the time I told them George was Christian because he wanted to torture people just like Jesus did.
