The Genocide Continues - Tell President Bush to act now!

This headline from a recent editorial in the Washington Post about the situation in Darfur says it all: "Still a Genocide."

Despite a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the largest Darfur rebel group, the violence continues. The starvation, torture, mutilation, and massacre of men, women and children go on. And the death toll climbs.

We must continue to act.

That is why we are calling on President Bush to push for a UN peacekeeping force in Darfur. It is the only way to ensure protection for Darfur’s innocent victims!

Click here to send a message to President Bush today: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/darfur/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=4089

Last month, President Bush personally aided in brokering the peace agreement. This was an important first step. Yet with hundreds of thousands in Darfur already dead, millions more displaced and many at risk every day, we must continue to press for a solution.

That is why we are asking President Bush to press for a UN peacekeeping force to be on the ground in Darfur no later than October. We cannot wait any longer!

Join us in asking President Bush:
    • To push for a UN force for Darfur;
    • To strengthen African Union troops already in Darfur until the UN arrives;
    • To continue supporting humanitarian assistance programs in Darfur; and
    • To appoint a special envoy to coordinate US policy in the region.

Click here to email President Bush today: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/darfur/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=4089

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

David Rubenstein
Save Darfur Coalition

Please do this for those who need us desperately.

Thank you!

6. Here's my take on it
With BushInc in charge of the government, I wouldn't trust them to tie my shoe laces, much less send troops to another country. They screw up every single thing they do. EVERYTHING. Not ONE thing they have done has been appropriate or responsible or done for the right reason.

I would support the U.S. supporting the U.N. to do the mission with troops from other countries with us paying a share. I would not trust BushCo to send our troops to another foreign land for any purpose whatsover.

The carnage and loss of life there are ghastly. I think if we had a reasonable administration of normal republicans or of democrats that something would have been done by now.

I suspect that its hard to get even dems here to suggest that BushCo go on another foreign adventure, even a humanitarian one, involving troops. Its like giving a three year old a loaded gun. Nothing good will come of it.

:-(

8. Irshad Manji said in a column today "why are the radical Islamists

not screaming about the murders of so many hundreds of thousands of their own in Darfur" paraphrased. I wish I could get a link to her column today. Canadian Newspaper. Anyone?

The point is where are those voices? We know all about the odd politician or journalist working their ass off along with synagogs, church groups and single people who have taken up the cause. So too organizations like SAVE DARFUR.

Where are the voices of Islam on this?

13. History of the Conflict & Current Situation... from Save Darfur...
Situation In Darfur

History of the Conflict

Open warfare erupted in Darfur in early 2003 when the two loosely allied rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), attacked military installations. In response, "Janjaweed" militias received government support to clear civilians from areas considered disloyal to the Sudanese government. Read more @ http://www.savedarfur.org/situation/history.

Current situation in Darfur

Nearly three years into the crisis, the western Sudanese region of Darfur is acknowledged to be a humanitarian and human rights tragedy of the first order. The humanitarian, security and political situation continue to deteriorate: atrocities continue, people are still dying in large numbers of malnutrition and disease, and a new famine is feared. According to reports by the World Food Program, the United Nations and the Coalition for International Justice, 3.5 million people are now hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced due to violence, and 400,000 people have died in Darfur thus far. The international community is failing to protect civilians or to influence the Sudanese government to do so. Read more @ http://www.savedarfur.org/situation/current.
