Post 3000!!! o'rielly and the S.S. "victims" of US Soldiers!
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 10:44 PM by MarianJack
After nearly 3 years on DU, I am finally at 3000 posts. In the last couple of weeks, I've been posting infrequently because I've always wanted these "landmark" posts to be special, at least to me (since my threads usually sink to the bottom faster than jenna bush's panties at a college frat cocaine party!).

There have been so many outrages by this mis- administration and their media ass-kissers lately that it's been difficult to choose. Additionally, there are other du'ers whose words about some of these things have been so perfect, I certainly couldn't improve upon them. Until NOW!

But now, at long last, the right wing loons who keep their jobs as CBS fires on & off camera staff for telling a true story have, again, crossed a line of obscenity that I couldn't imagine even after watching them glorify every step of this administration's and vilify every critic since this asshole was appointed in 2000.

As the son and nephew of World War 2 vets, my blood is boiling beyond measure at that fuck faced rat bastard cock sucking piece of elephant shit o'reilley for daring to bastardize the history (no, not bastardize, just fucking LIE ]) about the murder of american soldiers by the S.S. in the waning days of the war.

At last, they try to make victims of, not only nazis, but FUCKING S.S. (!) to carry water for a criminal administration trying to cover it's ass from awareness of their criminal actions.

I won't make some of the vets in my family better people than they are, but my father, his brother, my mother's brother and brother-in-law were combat veterans of the second world war. My father (who, in later life, was one of the truest bastards who walked the earth) flew 25 bombing missions as a bombardier over Germany. His brother had the same job in the Pacific. My Uncle was the top sergeant in his outfit that landed at Normandy (almost 50 years later, other men in his neighborhood still called him "TOP"). My other uncle, my mom's brother-in-law, was on one of the ships that shelled the beach at Normandy. All 4 of these men were in heavy action against a truly EVIL enemy. By some miracle, none of them even got a scratch. My uncle lost his ear protection before the shelling started and he knew that he WOULD NOT tel his commander that he had to sit out the biggest invasion in modern world history! All of them saw friends die. My father looked from th nose of his plane to his friend's and saw his best friend die when his bomber took a direct hit. My mother's cousin's husband was one of the men who never made the beach at Normandy.

The stories of my relatives are no more or less outstanding than any of the tens of thousands of other families except for te remarkable LACK of injury to my parents' immediate families. But they were there when it was their turn, unlike any of this administration or it's far right apologists in the media. HOW DARE o'rielly make men such as my relatives villains while making victims of some of the most vile people in human history? And all to carry water for the worst president in American History!

I would end this by paraphrasing Joseph Walsh and asking o'rielley "Finally sir, have you no decency?", but I already know the answer to that question.

I will, instead, finish with a line of the great James Whitmore from "The Majestic" (BTW, a VERY underrated movie). Close to the end, he and the other townspeople are listening to Jim Carrey testify before the HUAC. Carrey says that this was not what the soldiers in World War 2 fought for.

On this day, when here in Maine we flew our flags at half mast in honor of the passing of the last full-time Maine resident who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in World War 2, I will say to the men in my family and all other WW2 vets...

..."You deserve better. You ALL deserve better than this!"

PEACE!

6. How right you are..
While my Dad didn't fight in Europe he saw enough in the Pacific, but two of his brothers served in Europe. His next oldest brother, my godfather, landed at Normandy 62 years ago tomorrow, his youngest brother was a raw recruit who saw his first combat at the Battle of Bulge in December, 1944.

It still brings tears to my eyes whenever I remember what President Clinton said in his speech at the American Cemetery in Normandy on June 6, 1944: "These were the men who saved the world".

My father and both of my uncles had died before those words were spoken, but till their dying day everyone of them were my heroes along with all the other millions of men and women who "saved the world" during that horrible period from Sept. 1939 through Sept. 1945.

The calumny that O'Reilly spewed last week is a slap in the face of every one of the millions of people who sacrificed their lives, loved ones, etc.
My father and my uncles didn't give up the best years of their lives to let a despicable liar such as O'Reilly preach what he believes is reality to people.

O'Reilly, as you well know, has no decency and believe me the day will come when he will pay for it either in this world or the next. COUNT ON IT!!!

9. O'Reilly is a sociopath...
...I don't think he literally understands the difference between a truth or a lie...if something is convenient for him or his side, that makes it "good"...if something is inconvenient, that makes it "bad"...but truth? Honor? Dignity? What are thay...?
One of my Dad's best friends was killed at malmedy, so believe me, I understand...a terrific rant. Thanks for speaking for us all...
PS--where in Maine, may I ask? I have relatives up there, and if I could ever figure out how to make a living up there, I'd move in a second...

12. Honor to Your Dad's Friend!
Augusta, the state capitol, is our adopted home! We LOVE it here and would never leave Maine.

Fortunately, ChicaAzul has been in the same place since we got here. She teaches here in Augusta. I finally landed in the place from where I intend to retire (I'll be 51 in 2 weeks).

As far as o'liely goes, he wouldn't know truth if it bit him in the loofah!

but I suspect that some of the people at Faux actually do rise above the intelligence level of billo ~ you know, the ones who work there only because it's a job that pays the bills and not because they believe the crap that Faux spits out 24/7; and the ones who will one day catch a break and get out of there and hopefully make it big on the right (as in left) side of the media.

14. IS O'Reilly a Nazi? Just asking... (Great article)
By Robert Parry
June 3, 2006

link: http://www.consortiumnews.com/2006/060306.html

If someone else had done what Fox News star Bill O’Reilly did the other day – malign American troops who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and at Iwo Jima – it’s hard to imagine how ugly the Fox News reaction would be.

Think of how vicious the attacks from Fox News and right-wing commentators were on Sen. Dick Durbin for citing FBI criticism of detainee abuse at Guantanamo, or the smears against Dan Rather and other journalists who helped expose the scandal at Abu Ghraib, or the ugly campaign to boycott the Dixie Chicks for criticizing George W. Bush.

If one of those “usual liberal suspects” had said something one-tenth as offensive as O’Reilly’s remarks, Fox News surely would have offered up one of its loaded questions, like “Is (fill in the blank) Anti-American or Just Blinded by Hatred of Our Troops?”

But it’s hard to imagine any comments as outrageous as O’Reilly’s loose talk about war crimes supposedly committed by U.S. Army forces fighting in Belgium and by U.S. Marines in the bloody battle at Iwo Jima.

On “The O’Reilly Factor” on May 30, O’Reilly floated the argument that the alleged murder by U.S. Marines of 24 unarmed men, women and children in the Iraqi town of Haditha in November 2005 was just par for the course in wartime.

“In Iwo Jima, in the Battle of the Bulge, Malmedy, all these things,” O’Reilly lectured his guest, retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark. “You’re a military historian. You know these happened. It happened in every war. It’s happened in every army. …”

When Clark protested – “you’ll have to show me and prove to me that there were ever any American soldiers in Belgium and Normandy or in Iwo Jima who murdered civilians” – O’Reilly countered with a smirk and a shake of the head.

“In Malmedy, as you know, U.S. forces captured SS forces who had their hands in the air, and they were unarmed, and they shot them down,” O’Reilly said referring to the Belgian town of Malmedy, which was fought over during the Battle of the Bulge. “You know that. That’s on the record, been documented. In Iwo Jima, the same thing occurred. Japanese attempted to surrender, and they were burned in their caves.”

But O’Reilly’s historical certainty was astonishingly misplaced. First, at Malmedy, the atrocity on Dec. 17, 1944, was the other way around: about 86 surrendering U.S. soldiers were massacred by German SS panzer forces in one of the most notorious war crimes on the Western Front.

O’Reilly had turned the U.S. soldiers from victims into war criminals, while transforming their SS murderers from war criminals to victims.

As MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann noted on his “Countdown” program on June 1, O’Reilly made the same mistake last year in using the alleged U.S. atrocity at Malmedy – the supposed killing of unarmed SS troops by American troops – to blunt concerns about the Abu Ghraib scandal.

Despite encountering demands then for a correction, O’Reilly was back abusing the facts of Malmedy on May 30, this time to dilute outrage over the alleged murders of civilians at Haditha.

When challenged about his error after his May 30 program, O’Reilly didn’t exactly apologize but instead insisted he was referring to supposed U.S. revenge killings after the Malmedy atrocity. But that wasn’t what he actually said. (Olbermann reported that Fox News later doctored the May 30 transcript to substitute “Normandy” for “Malmedy.”)

Odder still, O’Reilly apparently was familiar with the actual facts about the Malmedy massacre, having cited the case in a newspaper column on June 27, 2005. That version correctly had the SS murdering U.S. troops, but O’Reilly mentioned the massacre only to set up a moral equivalence between U.S. troops and the SS – and then went on to suggest that U.S. Marines murdered helpless Japanese.

“After German SS troops massacred 86 American soldiers at Malmedy in Belgium on Dec. 17, 1944, some units like the U.S. 11th Armored Division took revenge on captured German soldiers,” O’Reilly wrote, adding: “In the Pacific, relatively few Japanese prisoners were taken in the brutal island fights.”

Yet, O’Reilly provides no specifics or documentary citations to support these war-crimes charges against Americans. While it certainly is likely that some individual American soldiers killed surrendering enemy troops, O’Reilly seems bizarrely sympathetic to the fascist forces of Germany and Japan, responsible for tens of millions of deaths.

O’Reilly also engages in historical revisionism with his explanation that the small number of Japanese POWs at Iwo Jima and other Pacific battles is proof that U.S. Marines committed systematic murder. According to most historical accounts, the Americans wanted the Japanese soldiers to surrender but they chose to fight to the death.

O’Reilly’s historical smears against U.S. troops in World War II read almost like some pro-fascist rationalizations circulating on some ultra-right Web sites.

Indeed, if there were a Fox News network that applied Fox News standards against Fox News personalities like O’Reilly, there surely would be one segment with loaded questions like “Why Does O’Reilly Enjoy Smearing American Heroes?” or perhaps “Is Bill O’Reilly a Nazi?” Just asking.

Robert Parry broke many of the Iran-Contra stories in the 1980s for the Associated Press and Newsweek. His latest book, Secrecy & Privilege: Rise of the Bush Dynasty from Watergate to Iraq, can be ordered at secrecyandprivilege.com. It's also available at Amazon.com, as is his 1999 book, Lost History: Contras, Cocaine, the Press & 'Project Truth.'

22. Is Bill Channeling Joe McCarthy again?
Something I did not no until I started to check out the links from the latest "Idiots" listing. It's really bizarre to hear RW propagandists (see Ann Coulter) try to resurrect Joe McCarthy as a hero. In fact it is really pathetic. But I suspect that this is where Bill O'Reilly's oddball history revision is coming from.

"Senator Joe McCarthy's infamous 1949 campaign to free Nazi SS officers who were convicted of war crimes for the Malmedy massacre. McCarthy, who apparently was trying to please a wealthy right-wing German-American businessman in Wisconsin, insisted that the entire case was a frame-up, with confessions obtained by horrific torture."

28. Great Post. Many WWII vet I know are very pissed at Billo.
Happened to be down at the coffee shop next to the VFW hall the other day and quite a few were there and discussing that jerk's comments. One said that had he been in his squad, he would have made Bill the permanent point man on patrol (he fought in the Hurtgen Forest and any WWII buff will tell you what that means).

I noticed that you (in a later post on this thread) encouraged folks to visit Maine. I agree. As long as they don't clog our roads and keeping buying the lobster-shaped ashtrays at $14.95 a pop.

From a Mainer a bit further north than you big city folks in the capital.
