NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Teenagers who take pledges to remain virgins until marriage are likely to deny having taken the pledge if they later become sexually active. Conversely, those who were sexual active before taking the pledge frequency deny their sexual history, according to new study findings.

In the initial survey, about 13 percent of adolescents reported that they had taken a pledge of virginity. Just one year later, however, more than half of this group said they had never taken such a pledge, Rosenbaum reports in the American Journal of Public Health.

...28 percent of nonvirgins who later took a virginity pledge retracted their sexual histories during the 1996 survey. The same was true of 18 percent of nonvirgins who later adopted a born-again Christian identity.

Sexually active teens who later took virginity pledges were four times as likely to deny previous reports of sexual activity than were those who had not taken virginity pledges.

And they ALWAYS should when some freak is snooping where they don't belong, or are in the process of manipulating you. (And no, child molesters and other sex criminals are not included in this.)

Raise a child to respect themselves and others, be honest and unafraid about sex, and they will have a better chance to learn to be responsible for their own sexuality and behaviour.

Our culture is fetishizing virginity--not as a health choice, but as some sort of totemic, sacred state of being. there was a woman, about thirty years old, who used to stand in a white robe in a clearing by the Student Center. She preached day and night about the desirability of being "pure before the Lord." In her case the purity was achieved through a miracle. She was a "born-again virgin." I kid you not. She didn't attract many followers.
