1. Does anyone listen to regular, broadcast music radio anymore?
I sure don't.

Not since iPod.

Everyone I know has gone either iPod or satellite. If they listen to broadcast radio it's for news/talk like Air America or NPR.

14. That's exactly what I was going to say
When I'm in the car I pop in a CD and listen to what I want.To hell with those country stations,I've been listening to the Dixie Chicks everyday and I don't NEED to hear their phucked up hatred. I have been shutting out ALL rightwing poison on TV too. Chris (slobber mouth) Matthews is STILL obsessing over Hillary,so I've quit torturing myself by not watching his twisted mind set.

This morning I got up and my husband was telling me how he was scanning the channels on TV and saw Don Imus sitting there pulling his chewing gum out of his mouth, stringing it up in the air and then putting it back in his mouth. That is one gross sick puppy. These rightwingnuts have the grossest manners I've ever seen. Ted Stevens picking his nose and rolling the shit around in his fingers,Paul Wolfowitch sticking his comb in his mouth and getting it wet with spit to comb his hair,Chimpy picking his nose in public at a ball game....God almighty those people are just plain SICK......and incredibly stupid.I hate to be in the same country as those freaks, but I don't have any choice.Thank God I don't have to be anywhere close to them. I would never survive,I'd be puking myself to death. :puke:

38. I haven't bought an album based on radio play in who knows how long
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 11:06 AM by Mike Daniels
All my album purchases are based around reviews, familiarity with the artist on some level or coming across something at the listening station that got my attention.

------------------------------

There's been enough media coverage about this album that lack of radio play is going to be a pretty weak factor in the overall sales success. If someone wants to sample it prior to a purchase decision I'm reasonably sure the CD is included on at least one listening station at every record store in the country.

The lasting power of the Chick's new album will be determined in the weeks to come With a big act, the first week is usually the single strongest week because the people most inclined to purchase are more likely to pick it up in the first few days.

The test of whether the band has really suffered from their comments will be in the next few weeks. Granted, a band that sold the quantity they did from their last studio album is still going to go platinum a few times over this time around. However, any significant percentage drop in total sales will pretty much show that they did suffer some commerical damage.

and by pulling this kind of shit, they push people to satellites, iPods and make themselves even more irrelevant.

Considering the millions they spent purchasing these monopolies in most cities, we should view this as something sweet in the making, not a problem to solve. They are destroying the very investments they made over the past 5 yrs.

I was upset when Sirius got rid of AAR as well....I am a big Stern fan, so Sirius is the only way to go for me...otherwise I would probably have XM simply for their superior liberal stations...however, on Sirius I still get to hear Stephanie Miller (my favorite) Lynn Samuels, The Young Turks and Bill Press...so its not THAT bad! Plus Jim Breuer is on the comedy channel and even though he isnt considered political, he certainly isnt a freeper!, and he's funny as hell.

Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 11:01 AM by HomerRamone
Air America signed an exclusive contract with XM and fucked over all the people who bought SIRIUS because they were carrying the whole AAR schedule while XM was only carrying part.

I have stayed with SIRIUS because I listen almost constantly to Little Steven's Underground Garage, the rock 'n' roll format of my dreams (all non-overplayed greatness from the 50s to today). I can always stream Air America on the computer or listen over the air...

44. not true
Sirius didn't want to pay the money. AAR was practically giving away their product to Sirius. Instead they paid millions to Stern, had no problem with the fox arm forcing them into additional programming.

Sirius made a conscious decsion to screw progressive radio, and go with "entertainment", and mostly right wing talk

46. For what it's worth, Stern had a *great* interview with the Chicks...
... last week. He apologized to them for ever making fun of them, asked them to play "Landslide," and was very emotional (for Stern).

He applauded them for giving the middle finger to Bush when most Americans (he included himself) were afraid to do so. It was really a fun, and at times poignant, interview.

16. Ratings are dropping, people are willing to pay to hear what they want.
This goes for broadcast and cable television as well. The big networks are seeing their audience numbers drop. People are going to cable, the internet, and other places for news. This should tell them volumes about the job they're doing.

People aren't getting what they want through the MSM, so they are going elsewhere.

The fact that no one can hear the Chicks on the broadcast stations, and their new release has debuted at #1 ought to be cause for great concern at the radio stations, but they're too short sighted to see what changes they need to make. Their audience will continue to decline until they become irrelevant.

17. At least with satellite radio, you get what you pay for
You don't have any money with earth-bound radio stations. All their money is derived from ad revenue, and the directors decide what gets on the air, not the consumer. With satellite radio, your wallet and your choice determines what gets played. That's freedom of choice, no?

I just called the two radio stations that I listen to when AAR has commercial break. The first response was that they do play old Dixie Chicks songs but not the new album until it has been on the charts for three or more months. Go figure? The second station said that they do not play Dixie Chicks because of the political stance they took. I left a message for the GM to give me a call. I realize that only cave people listen to the 'radio' but hey, it came with the truck! Peace, Kim

Screw video, they killed the radio star (with much apologies to the Buggles)

Their spin on delevering the news to their fan base, which has gotten steadily stupider and more redneck over the years. (I'm talking about their 'rock station' package...country led the way and became pop and purile garbage fifteen years ago and hip-hop much less a search for talent and more so a search for who can say the same catchy phrase over and over...

Then there's pop music...a true definition of crap.

35. It's number #1 in sales
But those aren't all sales to the public. For something to debut as #1, it's about the pre-orders for the Amazons, Best Buys, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers of the world. That what it means when it "ships" platinum or gold or whatever. The sales figures of 526K copies were for the week ending 5/24. Albums hit the streets on Tuesdays, and this one came out on 5/23. Therefore, this figure includes shipments to retailers and wholesalers, not only pre-sales to the public. Today's report should be more indicative of public sales.

Also, Paul Simon's Graceland had NO airplay, it became popular by word of mouth, and then they started playing one track on the radio. Same with the O Brother, Where art Thou? soundtrack. Forget radio. It's irrelevant.

42. KGSR In Austin 107.1
My favorite music radio station plays Dixie Chicks, Steve Earle, and many other great musicians. They are a commercial (for profit) station, but play what people in Austin like to hear. Even better, right after the start of Bush's Iraq war, when we were all so fucking depressed, KGSR co-sponsored a rally, Get Up Stand Up, with speakers and tables from all the progressive groups in the Austin area. They ran spots for the rally every hour. I will remember this for a long time - Austin mayor Gus Garcia saying that he would introduce a resolution against the war - that some people said that local officials shouldn't get involved in international politics- but local people are dying in Iraq - where do the Republicans think all the soldiers come from - they come from small towns and poor families - it is Austin and every other city's responsibility to stop the war.

Rock on KGSR

63. I bought because of Dan Wilson and Gary Louris

I've never purchased Dixie Chicks music before, but I'm loyal to Minneapolis rockers

See here . . .

Dixie Chicks - not a mania but definitely the largest press and media juggernaut I've ever been a part of. Our song "Not Ready to Make Nice" is the first single from the album and few stations are playing it on the radio. I wonder if they or Sony expected this? But despite little airplay, the song has become the calling card for the album, the Chicks' way of resuming the dialogue, and it's pretty interesting how strong the reactions have been.

Exciting but kinda nerve-wracking. And I'm not even in the band.

64. Bunch of pussies
Nowhere near the guts of the radio stations of the 60s.

And, ahem, isn't it ironic, that the suits running the radio stations might be likely former 60s D.J.s--you know, back when they had a heart and guts.
