School Sends Girl Home For Holey Jeans
School Sends Girl Home For Holey Jeans
Dress Code Bans Students From Wearing Clothing With Excessive Holes

POSTED: 9:29 am EST January 13, 2006
UPDATED: 1:08 pm EST January 13, 2006

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- A student at Shawnee Mission North High School was sent home Thursday because of the jeans she wore, reported KMBC-TV in Kansas City.

The girl's father called it unfair.

"I got a phone call from the attendance office that my daughter was being sent home because she had some excessive holes in her jeans," Dale Falke said.

Teenagers will tell you that jeans with holes in them are the style. But how many holes in the jeans are too many?

but I think this country needs to require uniforms for public school students.

Sure could avoid a lot of headache...

uniforms for everyone - there is equality in this, less distraction, less meaningless competition....

however, in light of the fact that this won't happen, I too say no holes is just about right

21. I agree
We were not of the higher income when I was a kid, and could not afford to dress in the styles of the time. Uniforms put us on a somewhat equal setting in school. I have no problems with them.

30. They've had a lot of success with that.
It's a fright to see the girls at my daughter's schools. The parents must be total morans... the girls come to school on a 40 degree day, heavy rain, and they're wearing the shortest skirt they can get away with, AND 3 1/2 inch heels, a tank top, and a light shrug sweater. Their makeup makes Tara Reid look Amish... Somewhere parents forget that the idea for their kid is to learn, not get picked up, at school.

Our daughter has one friend that is a homely girl.. but very tall and thin. I guess her parents fancy her to be of model build, because they buy her super short midriff tops, super low pants, (even tho that look is SO last year!). Parent's live vicariously thru their kids... that's all I can imagine. I feel sorry for the schools sometimes, the only thing missing is cocktails. Try teaching in that atmosphere.

32. The best thing that ever happened for our daughter.
Getting dressed in the morning is a no-brainer. She has 7 pr of exactly the same style pants in khaki, navy or black, and 7 long-sleeve shirts and 7 short sleeve shirts in the school colors. They are allowed to wear fancy funky socks.

She's happy to think she'll start attending regular highschool in a couple of years and they don't have a dress code. Guess I should start saving my bucks now :(

47. That's so true. Otherwise, the default distraction is what kinds of
clothes the kids can "get away with," which is just a big ol' conduit for the corporatist media and advertising machine right into the school.

8. Are those the jeans in the picture?
If so, yes, that's too many holes.

My son's school has a "no holes" rule, and although he gripes, I like it. When he wanted to spend his Christmas money on a $60 pair of overpriced GAP jeans that looked like they had been dragged behind a car, I said no. "You're not spending $60 on jeans you can't wear to school."

48. Abercrombie & Fitch have "distressed" jeans for $178
I've been doing mall walking for fitness after work and everytime I pass an A&F store with these jeans in the window it makes me nuts! On their website they list distressed jeans from $78 to $178! A&F actually charges $10 more for the distressed version of their jeans.

Some people in this country have too damn much money if they can let their kids waste their money on jeans like this. Guess I'm turning in to my mother, but damn if I had kids they'd have to earn their own money if they wanted to buy these jeans.

And I agree there either should be uniforms or an enforced dress code at school. If parents can't make sure their kid looks respectable for school then the school has to enforce it.

any holes around the butt when she turns around? i have boys that end up with holes every year and they start small and grow. i dont care about that. i buy news ones only if i have to. lookin like these holes were made. needs to know the rules. schools have WAY too much to be dealing with, they dont need this shit. parents can tell the girl to follow the rules, and no holes in the butt either

15. The problem the school is going to run into is the wording they used
In the dress code it prohibits clothing with "excessive" holes - that's a relative term. Either ban the holes or put a number or inch limit on it. My school used numbers - only so many inches above the knee for skits, shorts had to have an inseam of so many inches, etc. And we were allowed no holes in our jeans.

20. I remember when I was a freshman in high school
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 03:53 PM by FreedomAngel82
we didn't have a strict dress code and I think things were better because you could feel the enviornment was more lightweight than people worrying so much about your clothes and all that. I remember I was in band then and we had class at the end of the day and when it was marching season people would wear shorts throughout the day and one girl had shorts so short they would go up to a couple inches from her butt when she sat down. I think there should be restrictions where it becomes a distraction to other kids and stuff (like you can see through clothes or something like that). School should be more about education and not what you do or don't wear in my opinion. But than again I'm in college now and there's hardly any restrictions on what we wear. There's some of course but it's not super strict like in a lot of public schools.

seems some guy in operations used to like to wear his gym shorts without any underwear. One of our employees, a Brazilian guy, decided it was way too hot and the fact that women could wear skirts but men could not wear shorts was discriminatory. SOoooo, he wedged himself into one of his wife's skirts. Nobody said much to him other than point and laugh. I did tell him next time he does it, he probably should wax.

skirts no more than 2" above the knee. If you get sanctioned 3 times for dresscode violation (including not having your shirttail tucked in), it's a demerit for you. If you get 15 demerits, you're outta the school. They have a huge waiting list, so finding a replacement for you wouldn't be a problem. BTW, this is a public charter school.

No uniforms required at school dances, but you better not be showing any underwear, be wearing belly baring tops or sag/drag jeans. You will not be admitted. This is not a fundie school, they say the dress code is to show respect to your fellow students, the teachers, and to yourself.

25. Sorry, I support the school on this. Do parents have oats for brains?
It must be a living hell to work in schools now. Parents ALWAYS side with the kid, even whent he kid breaks the rules. They call the fucking MEDIA cuz their kid had to change her jeans? Oh.. the horror!! I hope she's not permanently scarred from this!!!

Get real. Schools have dress codes, and you have to abide by them. End of story. If you don't like the dress code, take it up through proper channels. All the parent has taught this child is to be selfish and disrespectful and to whine and cry when you don't get your way.

Kids get sent home to change all the time due to dress code violations. How about instilling some pride in their child and telling her that going to school is about education, not about showing her her (really awful) fashion sense.

Lots of holes... as long as they weren't on the 'panty' part of the pants near the crotch, our principle didn't seem to mind...

The guys at my high school got harassed much more for 'long' hair and wearing trenchcoats. (This was waaay before the 'trenchcoat mafia'; they just thought it looked 'retro'.)

this is not the first time there has been a problem with clothing worn to school by this girl. The previous incidents were mainly about the tops she wore. Beginning back in the 5th grade!

I couldn't get over his own outfit. Nothing like a black watch cap in his own home - for a TV interview, no less! Why he lets his daughter constantly challenge the school dress code year after year, I don't know. Other than for the attention it brings, I mean.
