Thank you, DUers
I wanted to post a big Thank You to DU. Tonight, I received an e-mail from my far-right wing mother-in-law, asserting all sorts of crap. I was able to refute it, in a factual way, with links, no less! And that is all because of all of you. You have educated me and informed me, and showed me how to be confident in the knowledge that you have shared with me. I was proud of myself for my plainly, but kindly spoken rebuttal. But mostly, I was proud of DU. For nudging me along, and informing me.

Thank you! :applause:

4. I don't know whether she will ever come into the light...
(she still LOVES Shrub, ugh!) I doubt whether my e-mail will change her mind about anything, but at least she was presented with facts, and those facts were supported by data. That data was from other DUers informing and educating me. :hi:

6. This place at times is such a wonderful learning tool.
My hubby told me tonight that he firmly believes
(at last) everything I've told him over the past
5 years- However the last approx 2 yrs of DU
has had quite a bit to do with that I know it.

Thanks for sharing Lavender!

7. Yeah Most Wingnuts Are Hopeless
...but that isn't the point. The point is that you told her the truth and there is no way she can say it wasn't rational. As most wingnuts do when they are presented with facts they do not like, she can say to herself (and anyone who is within 50 feet) it's all "internet conspiracy" stuff, but on some level she knows you were only trying to speak factually and with a civil tongue. Humor helps as well. Since I was taught you can say just about anything with a smile, I smile and throw an arm around my wingnut relative and tell him he is beyond hope, but I love him anyway since I have to because he is my brother-in-law and then I laugh uproariously. Little does he know as he laughs along with me how true that is (LOL).

Good job lavanderdiva!

Cat In Seattle :bounce: :toast:

14. she hasn't replied yet, but when she does, I'll let you know...
side story: a couple of weeks ago, she sent me another e-mail telling me that she was supporting that bill (1955?) for healthcare for small businesses. She had signed a petition showing her support and how she thought it would be a good thing for my husband and me, since we can't afford healthcare. I e-mailed her back, and in a rather lengthy rebuttal, showed her exactly WHY this was such a bad bill, and how her supporting it, actually would harm us more than help us, and limit our access to good healthcare. AGAIN, it was DU who had informed me about all that was wrong with the bill, and why it should never be passed. I again told her that universal healthcare was the best thing we could hope for.

SURPRISINGLY, (!), she e-mailed me back, stating that she had contacted the e-mail petition, asked that her name be removed from the petition, because I had educated her on how bad the bill was, and she was withdrawing her support for it!

SO, you just never know.

I only wish I had found DU when she was gung-ho, several years ago, for supporting the Texas bill that limits the amount you can receive when you sue a doctor, and limits your rights to sue them. She was all for that, and helped to get that passed, much to my utter dismay and regret. But I am trying with each e-mail I receive from her, and we will see how this latest effort does-- :hi:

17. she gets ALL her news from Fox.
that explains a lot. And she is a very intelligent lady (raised 2 VERY liberal sons, 1 of whom I am married to!), and when she hears the FULL scope of the argument, not just some hare-brained crap that FOX comes up with, she is more than willing to come around-- most times. But if religion is involved, that is another story.....

12. I agree with you, this site keeps me sane!
I have become so skeptical of all news as of late, I turn here and to Raw Story to see what is going on. As for my right-leaning in-laws in Georgia, I give up. Our e-mails and conversations are completely void of all political conversation. They just will not believe that the Repubs do not represent the best thing since sliced bread. I gave up on them.
