Justice Department Probing Domestic Spying Leak

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, December 30, 2005; 12:45 PM

The Justice Department has opened an investigation into the disclosure of classified information about a domestic surveillance program authorized by President Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, officials said today.

Justice prosecutors will examine whether classified information was unlawfully disclosed to the New York Times, which reported two weeks ago that the National Security Agency had been conducting electronic surveillance on U.S. citizens and residents without court-approved warrants.

The probe is the latest in a series of controversial investigations into leaks of classified information during the Bush administration, including the disclosure of a CIA agent's identity that has resulted in criminal charges against former vice presidential adviser I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

The Justice Department has also opened a probe into whether classified information was illegally disclosed to The Washington Post, which reported on a network of secret CIA prisons in Eastern Europe and elsewhere.

2. Oh oh...isn't this called abuse of power?
I would think it would be encumbent upon the Wapo and the NYT to start hammering this administration. The NYT when they published the wiretapping story said they had more. Maybe it's time for the "more"?

3. OH?
I suppose they did this when a CIA agent was outed too, huh? Yeah right! Or maybe it's just when it damages the Bush administration personally that counts. To hell with anything else.

left in its bloodstream, or any cajones at all, or even some shred of the instinct of self-preservation. Maybe they've become so corrupt and collusive that THIS is what it takes to get them to stop playing games with this fascist junta: THEIR OWN backs against the wall, rather than the distant Arabs and Muslims, whom this junta has slaughtered in the tens of thousands, and whose deaths they seldom report, never feature, and don't add up.

8. I think that I have figured out why (besides intimidation & abuse of power
I think that they have launched these DOJ investigations to block Congressional hearings.

18. The irony is that neither the NYT nor WaPo would be in this position
if they had simply reported the truth about bush to begin with.

I wonder how those editors are feeling about their decision to withhold the story of bush's bulge? They never heard the fable of the dog that bites the hand which feeds it, I suppose.

Oh, well, it's never too late. If bush pushes, both those papers need to shove, and they need to shove hard. I'm sure they're sitting on a lot of stories which could damage bush's so-called credibility even further. Have at it. Bring it on.

20. The REAL story here is the fact that
Our government is using its powers to conceal
illegal activity and crimes by labling such activities
as "Classified" and "National Security" documents.
How conveeeenient.
How treacherous.

How sad that we don't have a real Congress to
protect us.
