On the spot: 'Crowd wanted to skin us alive'
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-2201946,00.html

Tim Albone, correspondent for The Times in Kabul, was caught in today's riots which he believes could mark a turning point in the Afghan's relations with coalition forces

"We tried to get out to where the accident happened on the outskirts of the city. I went in an Afghan car with a translator and photographer.

"We managed to get to within about a half-hour drive of where the accident happened and could hear gunfire. We stopped to ask what was going on.

"The mob crowded around the car and people were shouting: 'Let's get them - let's skin them alive'. We got out of there pretty quickly and as we were leaving we noticed a car was following behind. snip

"I've been in Kabul for nine months and there has never been anything like this before. There is a real feeling in the air that today Kabul changed. There has been a lot of fighting in the south but this has mainly been between the militias and the American forces.

2. Bushco has attained the blessed state of FUBAR at last in Afghanistan.
FUCKED UP BEYOND ANY REDEMPTION.

Iraq is already there but nobody's admitting it.

12. I know. I prefer this version for the present circumstances.
The last two words in the old version were "all recognition," actually.

3. Kabul was the only place under a bit of control, until now.
"The Americans are saying that this was just one day of unrest, but I was speaking to one guy and he was shouting: 'Death to America - death to Karzai...' There is a growing mood that the locals want the Americans to leave but that is simply not possible at the moment."

Not possible, my ass. BRING EM HOME

4. Sigh. Over three years ago, I wondered why the hell
we weren't going to continue focusing on Afghanistan. Why in the hell there was talk of attacking Iraq when we were in the process of making sure Afghanistan was secure and stable.

There was never any intention of doing that, I'm sure. bush administration fuckers.

7. We had to stay
to defend the warlords, so they could continue the poppy production, don't you see?

10. I never supported invading and occupying Afghanistan
My posts are on record here at DU saying just that before Bush did it.

We were never chasing international terrorists around Afghanistan as advertised.

It wasn't to let women shed their burkas or let little kiddies go to school either.

It was all bullshit from the start.

It still is.

11. I see that now.
But I was semi-fooled at the time, sad to say. I was still suspicious of anything republicans and especially bush fuckers wanted to do. But I was semi-fooled.

I very quickly figured it out when nothing was done right, then the talk of attacking Iraq started.

6. Stewart Nusbaumer report:
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/052906Y.shtml

More information is coming in: A foreigner was dragged from a car and beaten; CARE International was attacked and damaged; an Afghanistan television station was thrashed, and is now off the air …

It is now 2 p.m., and again I hear the screaming of protesters, not from the west but from the east. The gunfire has become intense, the heaviest I have heard. Bullets fly overhead; it appears the shooting is now coming from all sides. The manager and I consider getting the rifles out of the storage room. One of the two maids is crying, and she is unable to stop. Two helicopters sweep across Kabul. Their spinning blades drown out the small arms fire - but for only a few seconds. The sharp crack of gunfire grows even stronger - a heavy burst of weapons on the east side of the wall, which is in the direction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. There are three heavy explosions, this to the south. Just over the wall, a pistol fires off several rounds….

...With Kabul in lockdown and sporadic gunfire still echoing through the city...

8. Quelle surprise! Afghanistan has always welcomed foreign occupiers!
Edited on Mon May-29-06 12:19 PM by TahitiNut
What's not to like about a foreign military occupying their cities and towns? What's not to like about a foreign military bombing villages and killing women and children?

Don't they know we've brought them 'democracy'?

13. The Afghan rebels did skin Soviet soldiers alive.
Documented in the book "Charlie Wilson's War". It was meant to strike fear into the hearts of the invaders. Another tactic in the book was, when they captured a prisoner, they literally gang-fucked them to death.

I hope we get out before that shit starts.

You know ... the one where people in uniform travel to Afghanistan all-expenses-paid and carry guns.
I wonder if that information is included in their Michelin Guides?
