Immigrant issue is totally Orwellian
Bush and the GOP leadership develop and push for an amnesty plan for illegal immigrants. Then they try stir up their base by saying that people should vote for them because they'll keep the Mexicans out.

The Bushbots fail to see the obvious inconsistency in any of that and go along with it. They actually think that the best way to "stand strong" against the Republican plan is to vote for Republicans.

Amazing, isn't it?

1. Bush says only 3.5% of illegal immigrants come from Orwellia
That's less than 1/5 of a Brazilian.

2. I saw this coming
I saw this coming, but it still amazes me. All most people realize is that "somebody" isn't "being tough" in illegal immigration. And that makes them want to vote for Republicans. The details don't matter to them.

3. Republicans have NO REASON to crack-down on illegal immigrants
According to them, we are experiencing unprecedented economic and job growth, reversing the terrible recession that Clinton left us with.

Obviously, the Bush economy-- which includes illegal immigrant labor as part of the economic formula-- is working very well for us. Why kill the goose that laid the golden egg?

And then, since we're all doing so fabulously well economically, and we can even afford to give the wealthiest 2% of the population a tax break during a time of war (unprecedented!) then surely we must have plenty of wealth to share with our illegal immigrant friends. It must be "trickling down" to them like it is to the rest of us!

If the Republicans say that we can't afford to take care of the same illegal immigrants that have been coming into our country since... what? (When did Uber-Conservative Ronald Reagan start his Amnesty program? I can't recall) To cut-and-run from our current Regan-inspired policies would mean that maybe the GOP-controlled House, Senate, Judiciary and Executive Branch is doing something wrong.

Now, they may whine about "border security," but as they are quick to point out, there hasn't been a single terrorist attack on U.S. soil since The Pet Goat Attack of 2001. (Unless you count the Anthrax attacks, a pair of serial snipers in D.C, a serial sniper in Michigan, and a shooting at an airport) so, Bush must be doing something right. And part of what Bush is doing right is cutting the budget for first-responders, immigration agents, and refusing to inspect more than 5% of the freight.

Perhaps it's because the borders are so saturated with illegal immigrant workers coming into our country to be exploited by unscrupulous corporations, that the terrorists are still waiting at the end of the line waiting their turn to sneak-in. Or maybe Al Quaeda agents weren't taught, "Don't drink the water," and they all died of dysentery in Mexico. Or their camels died of hypothermia in Canada. Who knows?

So, Bush's plan to keep our borders and ports safe on "The Honor System" is working!

Whatever the reason, Bush's plan must be working, so the Republicans shouldn't want to change a damn thing.

We have unprecedented security and economic prosperity-- why change anything?

Immigration? My answer to the Republicans is, STAY THE COURSE!

Do it for The Gipper.

It was, after all, his idea.

Or maybe it was his Astrologer's idea. Who would have thought we'd ever have a conservative Wiccan president with a gay son as an icon of the religious-right Christian conservatives! Ronald Regan-- blessed be!

Anyway, anyone who wants to "reform" immigration-- anyone who is willing to Cut-and-Run from our new-found prosperity and security-- hates America, hates prosperity, hates Bush, and most of all, they hate Ronald Reagan.

4.  GOP spin and immigration
Edited on Fri May-26-06 10:13 PM by LuckyTheDog
The immigration debate shows how true it is that, in the world of the Bushbots, details don't matter.

The fact that the Republican leadership has been pushing for amnesty at all costs --and that the Dems pushed for a more comprehensive plan from the start-- makes no difference at all to the Bushbots' devotion to the GOP.

The Republicans know that. They know they can depend on the gullibility and short attention span of its base and its willingness to swallow whole whatever Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity tell them.

And, as far as most Fox News/talk radio junkies are concerned, “liberals” developed the whole amnesty idea and the Republicans are "standing strong." Any explanations that take more than 10 seconds to articulate cause their eyes to glaze over -- and are dismissed as "liberal media lies."

Sure, a few Republicans in the House are making a good show of it by backing an unrealistic tough-sounding proposal that will never fly. But, in the end they'll give Bush most of what he wants. They always do. But, in this case, they'll blame it on the Democrats.

Meanwhile, the Democrats' call for a thoughtful proposal based on the dynamics of the PROBLEM, rather than the politics of division, goes unheeded. And the Bushbots continue with their fingers in their ears repeating "liberals are the problem... the Democrats have no ideas... God is on Bush's side... MUST VOTE GOP!"

It's sad to see, really. That mentality is destroying the fabric of our republic.

Statesmanship, patriotism and a sense of the good of the nation has been replaced by an "I win if you lose" attitude. So great is the Bushbot hatred of the "evil liberals" that they will blind themselves to their own interests.

5. Bush should capitalize on his ONE real success...
Edited on Fri May-26-06 10:22 PM by IanDB1
and rally all Americans around our REAL enemy-- Spammers.

Bush has done only ONE thing I have ever approved of-- he made the telemarketers stop calling.

Well, all of them except MCI Worldcom and Dish TV, anyway.

I think that everyone here on DU who has bothered to sign-up for the Do Not Call List can agree with that? The DNC Registry was GOOD. That transcends all political and partisan boundaries.

Except, of course, The Libertarians, who think people should "exercise the personal responsibility" to take their phones off the hook and bury them in the back yard if they don't want telemarketers calling them.

Now, Republicans like to blow stuff up. Especially if the "stuff" they are blowing-up screams and bleeds and leaves behind orphaned children.

I say, combine the heart of Republican strategy (bombing people) with the success of Bush's most popular program (The Do-Not-Call-List) and declare Spammers to be Enemy Combatants.

Let's bomb the spammers!
