My letter to Al Gore...
Dear Mr. Gore,

We live in troubled times. I’m weary. I’m watching our once great nation be systematically dismantled before my very eyes.

The “leadership” in this country has failed us. We not only need a change but we need someone to give us hope, to inspire us again. We Americans are up for a challenge, however, I fear the challenge that is before us, is one of survival, not one of greatness.

I supported Senator Kerry in his run for president, but the one simple thing that he lacked was a challenge for the American Citizen. Like another JFK who stated, “We are going to the moon, not because it is easy, but because it is hard”. Kerry, although a good man, did not ignite that kind of fire that gets us moving again. “We can do better”, to me was a no brainer. Of course we can do better, we can always do better, but what we as a nation need is a swift kick in the behind to get us thinking and get us back into gear. I want that gauntlet to be thrown at us for a challenge. We Americans yearn for this chance. It’s not, “we could do better”, but more like, “we are so much better than this”. We Americans lead by example not by excuses. And lately, out of Washington, we are getting nothing but excuses.

In my life of 42 years I have seen many things; some sad, some great, some tragic, but also some truly wonderfully amazing things. However, the last 6 years have brought us one tragic comedy routine after another. I’m tired. We Americans need hope.

I feel the future of America is dimming before my eyes. And that breaks my heart.

I ask myself: is this the America I envisioned as a kid?

Once upon a time in this country, men and women were asked to represent we the people in Washington, not because they wanted to but because the people deemed them trust worthy and they did so out of duty to the public and to the United States.

Mr. Gore, the task I request of you, is not easy, it is very hard. As a humble American Citizen that doesn’t wish to see our nation regulated to the dust bin of history as something once great, I simply ask, please, will you run for the President of the United States once again?

Our nation needs you.

Sincerely

7. Great letter -- I'd sign it in a minute!
All President Gore needs is a bit of a nudge and I think he'll be ready to take his rightful place at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

8. Forget everyone else signing it.......
What is Al Gore's address? I think we need to start a campaign here to ask Al Gore to run again. Anyone up for it? If we can send enough emails and letters to show we support him perhaps he'll make up his mind to run.

America needs him deparately.

This is his business address in Nashville, according to a thread posted here after his MLK speech:

9. I could not agree more..
But I also think it would be a mistake for him to verify any political ambitions until Summer 07.

We should not be doing anything silly like talking about running mates or making bumper stickers.

Oops.

12. Nice letter, but why does Al Gore want to hear you bash John Kerry?

Al Gore is great; Why not appeal to his greatness without bashing another great Democrat?

ON EDIT: hastily typed mistakes.

13. Nice letter but, to be fair, Gore didn't throw down that gauntlet in
2000 either.

I don't think you need to get in a dig at Kerry to make your point about challenging the American people.

I agree with you about the challenge, I just don't think you need to criticize Kerry to make your point.

15. I have to nit-pick
Use "relegated" rather than "regulated", unless you are trying to make a subtle free-market statement. ;-)

16. An incredible letter, javaman.
I'm thinking of setting up a "Draft Gore" petition on my 2008gore.com site.

Would you mind if I quoted two lines from your letter...with attribution to "javaman of DU"?

In any case, your letter brought a tear to my eyes...and thank you for writing to Al with a sincere request for his return to public service via politics.

19. Absolutely wonderful
I've seen that some others have thought you should have left Kerry out of your letter, but I like your letter just the way it is -- it's a valid point with many people. I talked to a lot of discouraged folks before the 2004 election who were voting for Kerry not because he set them on fire, but because he wasn't Bush. One of my relatives (who voted for Kerry) said that he is so tired of voting for the lesser of two evils (his words, not mine) every four years -- just once he'd like to get excited about a candidate. ***Please note: this is what friends and relatives told me, these were not my sentiments about Kerry.***

I think your point is right on -- we need a candidate with some fire in his/her belly that can inspire us. And I agree with you -- Al Gore's the man.

I sent a handwritten letter to President Gore back in January after his MLK speech; so did a lot of other DUers: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=153441

Great letter! The more letters he gets, the better.
