Secret gov't source tells ABC News: 'Get new cellphones'

Federal Source to ABC News: We Know Who You're Calling
May 15, 2006 10:33 AM
Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:

A senior federal law enforcement official tells ABC News the government is tracking the phone numbers we call in an effort to root out confidential sources. "It's time for you to get some new cell phones, quick," the source told us in an in-person conversation.

ABC News does not know how the government determined who we are calling, or whether our phone records were provided to the government as part of the recently-disclosed NSA collection of domestic phone calls. Other sources have told us that phone calls and contacts by reporters for ABC News, along with the New York Times and the Washington Post, are being examined as part of a widespread CIA leak investigation...

Under Bush Administration guidelines, it is not considered illegal for the government to keep track of numbers dialed by phone customers. The official who warned ABC News said there was no indication our phones were being tapped so the content of the conversation could be recorded.

A pattern of phone calls from a reporter, however, could provide valuable clues for leak investigators.

1. No-- Elizabeth "Matthew Shepard deserved it" Vargas has
better things to do.

It's like watching V for Vendetta all over again.

9. She was the correspondent on 20/20 who did the "story" in which
the killers of Matthew were able to tell the story that the murder was a drug deal gone bad. The spin was that Matthew was heavy into drugs and that all three were just involved in that.

They got their say--with no rebuttal--why? because their victim is dead.

Vargas is a skeevy skank for this.

3. I wonder who made that determination and why it wasn't deemed
important enough?

From DUer seafan:

Brian Ross: World News Tonight to cover NSA/reporter eavesdropping Updated at 1:45 PM

Will be on tonight's ABC World News Tonight, Monday, May 15, 2006.

Ross was on Ed Schultz's show an hour ago.

Here is the gist of what he said to Ed:

He thinks a tipping point has been reached with this warrantless NSA snooping. He says he is getting feedback from people *on the inside*, and they are very angry about what is happening.

Ed asked him, "Do you think more people are coming forward with information of what is happening----" "YES!!" was the rapid reply, even before Ed finished asking the question. "This MUST get out."

Ross said that listeners and readers NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. He said, "We are not reporting on troop movements or security planning, so it is not true that we are endangering nat'l security."

Ross said all of this is stemming from the CIA leak investigation of the newspapers reporting on the secret CIA prisons in Romania and Poland. It was reported that these 2 prisons were abruptly shut down and all operations reopened in a third secret location.

Ross said that another reason the CIA (Goss, et. al.) were angry over these leaks is that the papers also reported the U. S. military's use of the Predator missile inside Pakistan.

Ed asked if these revelations would intimidate sources into silence. Ross said they were all aware of how they should be careful of how they communicate, and that they work around it. So, the answer seems to be NO.

Ross said he was working on this story for ABC World News Tonight. He said it will also be on the ABC website.

(all the above is paraphrased..)

4. a little creepy, isn't it
I've got a feeling a bit of an internal war is raging over at ABC. Brian Ross is probably their most respected reporter.

6. How can they still be scared of this administration??
That idiot is at 29% approval rating. The evil spawn Cheney is in the low teens. What in the hell is it going to take to get this media to stand up to them??
