Protest songs for a pre-teen. I'm putting together a list for my
granddaughter. Anybody help me out here? I'm looking for current day artists that she can relate to. She and my daughter and son-in-law live in South Carolina close to SIL's family. The in-laws are all neocons, hate Clinton, Bush is Jesus, bring on the rapture type of people. The grandparents, unfortunately are bigoted, small-minded and make Archie Bunker look like a flaming liberal. (Doesn't want GD to be friends with "those blacks" in her class at school and demanded her pool be scrubbed after GD invited ALL of her classmates to a pool party to celebrate her birthday last year!) Damn, these people vote.

Anyway, the GD came to visit during Spring Break this year and we had a great time. Didn't talk too much about politics but she is one smart kid and dislikes Chucklenuts - even though her grandparents and father thinks he is just wonderful. After she went home she got into an argument with her other grandmother about Chucklenuts and the war. Now this kid took on her grandmother and killed her with the facts! (My daughter reports that the grandmother is still nursing a bruised ego over being bested by an eleven-year old!) GD told her GM that Bush is terrible because he is killing "other people's babies" with his war for no reason. Told her grandmother to quit living her life being scared all the time.

When she was here we downloaded (legally, I might add!) a bunch of her favorite music and burned it to a CD. Her birthday is rolling around soon and I would like to make her another CD with artists of today that have a message.

I know that the Black Eyed Peas has put out a song bashing Chimpy (need title), I've got Pink's "Hey, Mr. President" and after that I'm stumped. Last night on Real Time Maher ran through a quick list but I didn't catch them.

Anyone got some suggestions? Wouldn't want to send her any profane or violent music so need to keep it clean. She listens and learns the lyrics of every song she hears so it would be funny to hear her singing along with Pink, BEP to the other side of the family. Her other grandmother would blow a fuse. (The other grandmother - religious nut who is in the church every minute the doors are open - calls me to my daughter's face a "god-damn, commie liberal who hates America and is ruining HER granddaughter." I don't tell her son exactly what I think of his mother - liberals are more polite.

3. Songs specific to the current
situation are limited. It sounds like your GD is a bright young woman. Why not just have her listen to a wide range of anti war, or rather, pro peace songs?

Surely the Buffalo Springfield song "For what its' worth" (Steven Stills greatest accomplishment) written about Vietnam can apply today. There are no swear words nor does he mention anyone in particular, but the best line for your GD might be "young people speakin' their mind"

Then have here listen to CCR's "Fortunate Son", Bob Seger's "2 plus 2 is on my mind", Bob Dylan (known as Blind Boy Grunt) and "John Browns War"

That should get her started......... :)

7.  "Jerusalem" by Steve Earle and "Where Have All theFlowers Gone?" by
Pete Seeger. Earle has a rep for being a little rough but this song is a real gem;initial despair followed by a hope for peace in the Middle East.Joan Baez has also recorded it and as for "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?",well, even her prehistoric grandparents might like it.

They had their pool scrubbed after their granddaughter's black friends used it? That was extreme in the 50's. They sound disgusting;be grateful that your granddaughter's having none of their nauseating ways.

Any number of songs by David Rovic
You can dl David Rovic songs for free.... LEGALLY
He played at Camp Casey this past summer, and does lots of European tours and Human RIghts activities/

He has one called "My Daughter" that is very poignant and Another one called "The Ballad of a Cluster Bomb" which is very hard hitting but these two would not be considered "rock and roll" by someone in SC and the Neocons there just might listen to it too.

Here is the mp3 dl page (LEGAL!)
It is long... maybe you could make her a cd of just Rovic!

15. Green Day, When September Comes
Edited on Sat May-13-06 11:43 AM by davsand
Started out as anti war, was used for a Katrina montage, but still a nice song. The video was obviously anti war. That whole album really is pretty anti-Bush, if you listen to it.

Frankly, I'd look at some of the Sweet Honey In the Rock recordings if it was me. Lotta strong women's voices singing stuff that isn't profane. It is usually directed toward civil rights and social justice type subjects, but always amazing. Lots of old gospel or spiritual style songs

My personal suggestions would be Study War no More (an OLD song--Willie Dixon wrote it, I think?) and maybe Ain't Gonna let Nobody Turn Me Around. You can pretty much bet that anything they do will be amazing.

Bob Marley's Get Up Stand Up is another amazing song--again, nobody is gonna get mad at you over over those lyrics either.

You have to be careful with reggae sometimes, because it is frequently based in the Rastafari* religion, which will creep out the conservative folks but there is an awful LOT of great protest stuff there.

Similarly, I'd look at some of the stuff coming out of South Africa during the struggles there. Ladysmith Black Mombasa had some wonderful songs, and it was very much a cry for freedom.

Good luck with your project and you ROCK as a Grandma to do this!

17. Thanks everyone for the excellent suggestions.
My girl will love this stuff. You think it is hard to "raise" a child a liberal in today's world you ought to try it long distance!

She is coming for a month this summer to stay with me - lots of good quality time to hit the museums, aquarium, library, etc. (I'm the "egghead" grandmother, her other one takes her shopping.) She will be totally corrupt by the time she gets back home!

Dolly Parton has a somewhat new cd of anti-war songs called "Those Were the Days" Some good covers of older songs "Blowin in the Wind", "Turn, Turn, Turn."

There's also Peter Gabriel- "Games without Frontiers", "Not one of Us."

The Police -"Invisible Sun", "Spirits in the Material World"
