Any other moderates been pushed to be more inclined towards impeachment?
Edited on Thu May-11-06 08:29 PM by Armstead
I must admit, although my politics are progressive, I am somewhat of a moderate by temprement. I have tended to dismiss talk of impeachment. I've figured that we are stuck with riding out the rest of his term, and that impeachment is both unrealistic and not politically smart at this point.

BUT THIS!!!!!!!!!! :grr: :grr: :grr:

None of this stuff about phone evesedropping surprises me. BUT TO HAVE THE WORST SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED has strirred me out of my recent state of apathy about meaningless Beltway Bullshit. This is outrageous beyond my wildest expectations.

If the Democrats have any spine, they're going to jump on this like ugly on a snake.

If there are any Republicans with any sense of principles, they'll join them.

This is something tht NO ONE should condone or accept, regardless of political positions.

Anyone else feeling the same way?

1. I feel that if they DON'T jump on it
then democracy is all over, except for the crying.

2. I didn't used to think so -- but I do now
I igured the damage was correctable with a shift in the political wind.

But this is the last straw.

3. Impeachment could bring us Weasel Face
and his impeachment could bring us the most worthless Speaker of the House in the history of America, Denny Hastert. I think we should concentrate on winning back both houses of congress this fall and electing a Democrat in 2008. Putting this country back together and restoring our prestige in the world will be no small task. I am not against impeachment but think we should focus and spend our energy elsewhere.

5. I thjought that way before today
But I think it's time to draw the line.

This draws a clear distinction between freedom and totalitarianism.

It's that clear.

4. *First* we need the House and Senate.

And Dems unfortunately cannot just jump onto the stump saying, "I want to impeach Bush." The Repugs are already lining up on the "Dems just want to impeach" mantra and they're only going to get more shrill with it. Dems should not play the Repug game.

Dems need to talk about accountability, balance of power, and culture of corruption. This can all be framed under the rubric of rubberstamp Republican congress. Of course, they also need to talk about their plans to defuse the Repug "Democrats don't have a plan" mantra.

The Repugs can do absolutely nothing about this. Bush has dropped the Repug congress into a hot stew. They're going to try to get out of it by distracting people with things like gay marriage, abortion, immigration, and, of course, impeachment.

Dems do not have to talk about impeachment. Everybody already knows it's sitting there in the stew pot with ChimpCo.

7. That one works, too.
I especially like the bastids part.

Oh, you forgot to frame your message with rubberstamp Repug congress.

The rubberstamping bastids broke the law and threaten democracy.

9. Nice to see a moderate supporting impeachment.
You're right, this shit HAS to stop! We CANNOT take 3 more years of this shit! I fear there won't be a country in 2008!

15. I believe that I heard Durbin on the radio speaking out about it very
strongly. But he wasn't identified by name.

And of course Feingold recently put forth a censure resolution.

Your question seems to be addressed to moderates only.

17. I'm a liberal
I'm pretty far to the left on most issues.

When I say "moderate" I am referring to the approach to things. I've tended to think that the system will correct itself, and that things like impeachment should be seen as a last resort.

But this stuff is pushing my moderate temprement to the wall. The democrats -- and people of good conscience of all political stripes -- should not lie down while these people dismantle democracy.

19. Ok, I believe that I have a moderate temperament as well
But I still consider myself a liberal, in large part because I try to use a rational thought process to determine my positions on things, rather than believe almost everything I hear spouted by the corporate media. I believe that people who do that today are considered by the corporate media to be extreme radical liberal whackos, as Chris Matthews would say.

Anyhow, I agree that impeachment should be seen as a last resort, reserved for such extreme actions as receiving blow jobs while in the White House, and then lying about it while under oath:sarcasm:

But seriously, we passed the "last resort" phase with George W. Bush a long time ago IMO.

Here is a listing of 5 charges drawn up and considered earlier this year by the "Committee of Inquiry into Crimes Against Humanity Committed by the Bush Administration":
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=187503

I agree with all of these, except possibly number 4, and this doesn't even include the illegal wiretapping, since that issue was less evident at the time these charges were drawn up.

I mean, if lying to the citizenry and to Congress in order to justify a pre-emptive war, which has no legitimate basis whatsoever is not grounds for impeachment, then what is?

In a sane world and a sane country, Bush would have been impeached and convicted a long time ago.

18. I think of myself as a progressive moderate with a splash of libertarian,
but I thought he should have been impeached immediately after his inaugural address Jan. 2001. Everything that's happened since has only confirmed my original feelings on this.
