5. Wasn't that about the time that they were concerned about
the national debt, too? You know, the thing they kept harping about for 40 or so years, saying "Wait until we're in power, holding the House, Senate, and Presidency . . . THEN you'll see the national debt erased!" Now they love it, so that they can eliminate programs that don't benefit the wealthy and comfortable . . .

6. I'll bet some of them have quietly crept away from freep-land
because they really did believe such things, and Republican reality does not square with their right-wing theory.

I do not think such people announced a repudiation or conversion. I think they quietly withdrew to ponder their cognitive dissonance.
