One stop shopping: Let your phone company know how you feel
Edited on Thu May-11-06 08:14 AM by FLDem5
Tell them that is it NOT okay. Tell them that you trusted them to keep your private information PRIVATE.

If they don't hear from their customers, they will think that it is okay to do this.

1. AT & T email form does not work
After selecting a state or area code, you are redirected to a notice page, then to nothing.

In short, typical AT & T service.

11. I just sent this to Bellsouth
USA Today article regarding giving our Phone records to NSA.

Your privacy statement states:
Certain federal, state and local laws or government regulations may require us to disclose non-public personal information about you. In these circumstances, we will use reasonable efforts to disclose only the information required by law, subpoena or court order to be disclosed.

Can you explain what "reasonable efforts" was used to give the NSA access to our phone call history? What law, subpoena, or court order justified this invasion of MY privacy?

Please respond by email as I would like to retain a copy of your response.

3. Just called Verizon
They had a recording saying, "The privacy of your information is your right and our duty." Can you believe that? I feel sorry for the guy I talked to because he was saying that this only involved Verizon Wireless (which I believe is incorrect) and even if that's the case we also have Verizon Wireless so he couldn't weasle his way out of my discontent.

5. Question: I don't use BellSouth for phone service, but they
own the lines (I use a CLEC - Knology - to provide phone service, not that I use my landline much. I'm a cell phone gal).

Do I contact BellSouth or Knology?

9. Bell South
Bell South is the ILEC, and they've given your phone calls to the NSA irrespective of what the CLEC thinks about it. The only thing your CLEC could possibly do about this is to quit doing business in your area. The nature of ILECs dictates that the CLECs have no other options.

Cell phones ultimately go through the same switches too. They have it all. We have been violated top to bottom, east to west, wired and wireless.

10. Here is a snip from the USA Today blockbuster:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-05-10-nsa_x.htm
<snip>
AT&T recently merged with SBC and kept the AT&T name. Verizon, BellSouth and AT&T are the nation's three biggest telecommunications companies; they provide local and wireless phone service to more than 200 million customers.

The three carriers control vast networks with the latest communications technologies. They provide an array of services: local and long-distance calling, wireless and high-speed broadband, including video. Their direct access to millions of homes and businesses has them uniquely positioned to help the government keep tabs on the calling habits of Americans.

Among the big telecommunications companies, only Qwest has refused to help the NSA, the sources said. According to multiple sources, Qwest declined to participate because it was uneasy about the legal implications of handing over customer information to the government without warrants

<snip>
Ownership
Cingular is a joint venture between the domestic wireless divisions of AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and BellSouth (NYSE: BLS). AT&T Inc. owns 60 percent of the company and BellSouth owns 40 percent, based on the value of the assets both contributed to the venture.

33. I e-mailed them
Text of my letter:

I am very disappointed that you would take part in the NSA data-mining. I trusted your company and always gave high marks when polled. (Harris interactive)

I feel that you have betrayed our trust. I will be looking for another carrier, one that believes we are a nation of laws, and respects those laws.

If you have a change of heart, I will not change carriers. Stand up for our constitution. Do the right thing.

--------------------end text

I also sent a copy of section 222 of the telecommunications act.
