So are Republicans ok with vast, unchecked wiretapping of Americans?
Does this fit in with their worldview and their concept of a free America? Are they ok with America becoming a dictatorship? Is this supposed to be just a Democratic issue? Please! This should unite the entire country in an uproar to save our country, to cherish the past and to protect the future.

1. They must be.
So what do they know that's going to save them?

And if we know, would we turn become turncoats ourselves? Survival instinct being paramount, most DUers would too.

2. "unchecked wiretapping"
I think that the most recent information about domestic spying has to do with cell phones.

3. Only until a Democrat is President
Then, it will be an outrageous, irresponsible, unconstitutional betrayal of the American people worthy of impeachment and removal from office.

13. Exactly.
I think it's really astounding that they're so short-sighted. I have a feeling they'll start changing their minds about surveillance of private citizens the closer the 2008 presidential election gets.

Edited on Thu May-11-06 07:28 AM by Norquist Nemesis
but that it's the companies that collect it. The government merely buys what's out there on the open market. :eyes:

They don't care that it's illegal. Anything to keep us safe. Then they go into the "Why Do You Hate Amurka, Traitor, Thank God For Bush" speech.

7. when we get back in power (hopefully), do we continue with
the wire-tapping, only on them now? After all we want to prevent more Oklahoma City bombings done by the right wing crazies . And do we fire all the republicans in the CIA? Do we lock out all the repukes from committee hearings? Do we have no-bid contracts to Ben and Jerry's and Apple Computers? The repuke have shown us the way....

Not until you get the name of a celebrity or someone they can relate to will the tide turn on this piece of news.

12. They are convinced that as they do nothing wrong, they will
never be bothered; if you ask them if a Democratic president should have these powers they have no answer. I can only think that they are refusing to tell you that they truly hope there will never be another Democratic president. They have the lock on all three branches and hope that will mean no more opposition in the future.

They value "unity" over anything and probably would prefer a dictatorship where everybody had to toe the line. I have talked to some of them who believe force is the only answer. One who didn't even believe in diplomacy - you'd better have a big stick to back it up. They project themselves onto others to get a negative view of human nature - we would all kill and steal unless forced not to. So other people are a source of fear.

16. They were ok with warrantless wiretapping and the government lies
and cover-up when they thought it was just confined to people suspected of chatting with terrorists located in another country - because thats who BUSH said this program was limited to.

I sincerely believe that the average American would not think that the government has the right to track every call you make for no stated purpose whatsoever. Unless they just want to roll over right now to a new dictatorship that is controlled by a New World order of oil, war, guns and drugs.

17. I hate to hear 'if I did nothing wrong it is OK'
Who is the judge of 'wrong'? The way things are now you can not even be a Republican and be called a good American if you step out of the line Bush has put down. That has got to really rub many in that party the wrong way. Lets face it I am willing to bet McCain's phones are tapped.

....."If you haven't anything wrong you have nothing to hide". End of story for them.:spank:

My argument on that is always the same, "Yes, I do have something to hide. MY privacy." It shuts them up everytime.

....all the time fundies spent investigating "Whitewater" and "Clinton's sex life" wasn't a waste of time.:wtf: I remind neocons/fundies all the time of that discrepancy too and they suddenly have nothing to say. I've never figured that out!!:sarcasm:

24. So they don't mind saying goodbye to "Confidentiality" with their lawyers,
clergy, doctors, nurses, psychologists, etc? They don't mind if the government decides to share what they learn with whomever they choose to down the road? and... if we take this just a little bit further... what if this giant government data base is hacked into? Do they mind that even the slimiest folks in the world may potentially know that they have erectile dysfunction, an STD, hemmeroids, etc?

Privacy matters and must be protected for ALL Americans... even those too stupid or naive to know better.

28. Why am I not surprised...
can these people be any more stupid?

I was a Repub for many years, and I would never have thought that this was a good thing. Where's the "smaller government" in this? I don't see how any classical Republican could possibly be comfortable with this. This is scary and infuriating. President Kerry wouldn't have stood for this...Washington would have been awash in pink slips had the real winner taken office.
