President George W. Bush Arrives In South Florida

POSTED: 5:45 pm EDT May 8, 2006

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- President George W. Bush arrived in Fort Lauderdale on Monday for a visit to South Florida as part of a fundraising effort by Florida Republican, U.S. Rep. E. Clay Shaw, NBC 6's Michael Williams reported.

Air Force One touched down at about 4:45 p.m. at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where Bush was greeted by local dignitaries including Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle. Bush also gave a volunteer service award to a North Broward high school student.

Bush will provide a draw for the about 100 guests who will gather at the home of Monday's fundraising host, South Florida auto dealer Mike Maroone.

"It's absolutely an honor and a privilege for both myself, our family, our friends, our business associates. It's once in a lifetime," Maroone said.

<snip>

After attending the fundraiser on Monday evening, Bush and Shaw will visit senior citizens in Coconut Creek to discuss the Medicare drug prescription plan before Bush goes to Tampa, Orlando and back to Washington.

Mike Maroone frequently advertises on WJNO - Randi's home station in West Palm Beach.

1. Can't you get a large group of people together and protest outside
of his hotel? If you have to put up with him staying there, you should take advantage of the time!

2. Don't know where he is staying
Didn't even know he was going to be here until this afternoon, didn't even announce his arrival time until about 4PM. No time to arrange anything, sneaky bastard.

6. Protesters rally outside private fund-raiser attended by Bush
I'm obviously not on their e-mail list!

http://www1.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/MI19994/

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- About 50 people gathered outside a gated community to protest the Bush administration and Iraq war Monday, as President Bush arrived for a private fund-raiser.

Bush was to attend the fund-raiser for Republican Rep. Clay Shaw who is running against Democratic Sen. Ron Klein in the 22nd Congressional District.

Protesters held signs that said "Stop oil addiction" and "Hands off my civil rights," while chanting "No blood for oil."

"We're extremely concerned that this war has turned into another Vietnam," said Kathleen Healey, 45, of Fort Lauderdale. Healey was a protest organizer.

Another protester, 17-year-old Nikki Boortz from Boca Raton, said she was mainly participating to protest the Iraq war.

"I don't think it's fair. I don't like how so many Iraqi civilians and children are dying," Boortz said.

I know what you're saying. The "gated community" mentioned, though, is in Las Olas Isles. I know exactly where it is, but no idea how to get there from land - only from the New River. And less any one freak out, this was reported on the news and if you've ever taken a River Cruise with friends who come to visit, you, too, would know exactly where this estate is located. It's beautiful BTW.

Edit: Thanks for the kick, Bear. :)

10. Bush helps raise $800,000 for U.S. Rep. Shaw in Fort Lauderdale
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/lifestyle/sfl-coylettersmay06,0,1955113.story?coll=sfla-features-headlines

I'm totally creeped out now. Please remember that Broward County is the bluest county in the State of Florida. Our, cough, fine DINO mayor was first to meet him.

FORT LAUDERDALE -- President Bush flew to Fort Lauderdale on Monday, raising a record-breaking amount of money for U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw, R-Fort Lauderdale.

Over 350 people attended, contributing over $800,000 -- Shaw's single-largest fund-raising event in his 25 years in Congress, he said, and possibly the largest fund-raiser any member of Congress has had.

. . .

On Monday, the president flew in to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, as protective gun-men watched from the rooftop. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle, a registered Democrat who is nonetheless proudly conservative, was the first to greet him.

"I think Shaw's proud of the president,'' Naugle said beforehand. "I am. I mean, who's against tapping someone's phone if they're on the phone with Al Qaeda? Only a crazy, wacko liberal.''

. .

The appearance drew about 60 anti-war protesters -- and at least half that number of police -- to Idlewyld/Merle Fogg Park at the western foot of the Las Olas Boulevard bridge, along his route to the fundraiser. Behind a waist-high steel barrier, and row of previously planted Shaw campaign signs, the protesters chanted, "Resist, fight back, no war against Iraq!"

Their numbers included pregnant women, children, retirees and even a contingent of the Raging Grannies, a national protest group. They waved signs like "Bush Step Down" and "Impeach the War Criminal."

16. Local Fox Affiliate just aired protesters
They haven't updated the website yet.

Male Talking Head: "His poll numbers may be tanking, but President Bush in South Florida this evening, hoping to be a rain maker of sorts. The President is here to raise cash for Republican Candidates."

Female Talking Head: "Protesting the name of the game for some 50 or so people outside that private fundraiser who had a message for the president . . "

Signs: "Bush Terrorist" - "No More War" with a peace sign - and a lady holding a baby - "We Can't Drill Our Way Out of This Crisis".

Blah, blah . . .

More protesters . . .

"War for Profit"

"Impeach The Terrorist"

Kathleen Healy: "Now it's time, it's time to turn against the Bush Administration. Say, no, we're not going to go to war. Stop spending out tax dollars. Help the people in the Gulf. Help clean up our own cities. Help clean up our own communities here, and put money back into this country."

Reporting from Fort Lauderdale,
Cindy
