• GOP struts its stuff

President George W. Bush is expected to visit Northern Kentucky May 19 - and this time he won't just be passing through the international airport on his way to Cincinnati.

Bush is scheduled to speak at a rally on American economic competitiveness at Northern Kentucky University and then attend a joint fund-raiser for Rep. Geoff Davis and the Republican Party at the Hilton hotel in Florence.

Bush's plans to stump for Davis reaffirm the significance of the race for the 4th District seat in Congress. The race is considered one of the most competitive in the country and has caught the interest of both national parties, which are expected to pump considerable money and resources into the district.

Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, said Bush's visit is great news for Davis.

"It will probably make him win by a wider margin than he already is going to win by," Thayer said.

Protest details are still being worked out.

Statement from Ken Lucas when he was the Congressman for the 4th district in 2003:

Lucas, a military veteran, originally supported the invasion of Iraq.

"I thought that the administration needed bipartisan support, and I was for our commander-in-chief," Lucas said. "Because I felt at that time it was the right thing do. If I knew then what I know now, I would have never voted for the war.

"There was no imminent danger about weapons of mass destruction," he said. "And the tune of the administration changed from that to ridding a country of a ruthless dictator."

The Bush administration also was not straightforward about the intelligence it had, releasing tenuous information that fit its goal of attacking Iraq, Lucas said.

"I feel deceived," he said.
