FREEPERISMS
Edited on Tue May-02-06 02:38 PM by Julius Civitatus
Freeperism - (etim: from Free Republic, and Greek suffix "-ismos" that forms abstract noun)

Def: An incorrect typing of a word by substituting a similar-sounding word with different meaning, as practiced by right-wing activists like members of Free Republic and other assorted wingnuts. The Freeperism is not commonly intended for comic purposes, but it often has an unintended comedic effect in more educated readers. Freeperisms usually denote a low intellect and a lack of curiosity for matters of grammar, spelling, or any debate etiquette. Freeperisms often are the result of typing in a distressed and furious state, with festering anger usually aimed at liberals, media figures, minorities, or any other perceived enemies, real or imagined. Anger and bitter resentment are common elements feeding the author of the Freeperism.

Examples:

This is HUGH! - (This is huge!)

It doesn't make SINCE - (It doesn't make sense)

He SHOULD OF done it - (He should have done it)

MORAN - (Moron)

YOUR a commie! - (You're a commie)

I hate YOU'RE liberal lifestyle - (I hate your liberal lifestyle)

I don't like to HERE the truth - (I don't like to hear the truth)

I hate THERE ideas - (I hate their ideas)
Often, Freeperisms involve the specific misspelling of a name with the misguided intention of making it sound threatening, alien, or bizarre. Even though this version of the Freeperism has a comedic aim, it usually fails miserably.

Examples:
Klinton,

Klintoon,

Demoncrats

DemoncRATS

HITLERy Klinton

LIEberals

Freeperisms are common and varied. Please post your examples of Freeperisms, present and past.

49. I suppose if we clarified what we meant by qualities we might have
in common with freepers, we would get in trouble with the moderators.

So perhaps it's better if we don't.

Still it does seem a bit cowardly to hold one's tongue in the face of moderators.

56. It would be fun
I've noted for example, that many here at DU seem to possess a similar narrowness of mind, compared to people in Freeperland. People who step outside the narrow confines of their beliefs are to be vilified. Stepping outside of the narrow confines of acceptable belief, well that's something a secret enemy would do.

There's also a self-dramatizing paranoia which seems to animate both discussions, on occasion. I get the feeling that many people here and there are staring in their own little movies. Here it tends to be movies on the French Resistance or the Weather Underground; there it tends to be Red Dawn (the film about a soviet invasion of the US and the poor teenage kids who run into the hills and fight a guerrilla war).

And of course general mean-spiritedness seems to animate some people on both sides of the fence. Probably more over there than here, but there's plenty of it here too.

Of course you needn't assume that any of these descriptions matches any specific resident here at DU.

I obviously agree with the policies over here, or I would be over there (unless, of course, I'm a secret freeper).

Is Democratic Underground more congenial? Yeah, so long as you are on the same page as everybody else. If you aren't, it's a much less pleasent place to be. There's a lesson there I suppose.

62. I have experience with both as well
Frankly possibly more hardcore - as I posted on an Ann Coulter Fanboard for several months (the highlight of which was when a fellow poster wished me enjoyment at my next NAMBLA meeting. I left shortly thereafter).

DU is better in many regards, in part because Democrats are more interested in creating a community. That said, a certain number of people who post on political boards are going to be assholes who want to feel powerful by slamming into people who disagree with them. Does Freeperland have a larger share of this type? Yeah. Do plenty of them come here? Yeah. Assholery is not confined to one political philosophy.

Of course DU has the benefit of being largely right on the issues (at least in my opinion).

71. I’ll still leave the h in marihuana
I don’t spend enough time on the RW sites to have all of the nuances down but I think I can offer this, even though it isn’t in Freeperese.

During a school board election in a near community, one candidate (put prayer in schools, secular humanism is the work of the devil, phonetics only, blah, blah, blah) claimed that the Superintendent used a method of Mind Control developed by the Soviet Communists called the Delphi Method.

Couldn’t be more wrong, here is the Wiki entry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi_method

The RW candidate also damned the district for not using the Manila Method to teach Math and the Sciences. Here’s a Wiki entry on that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_Science_High_School

The Manila Method was a hot topic on local RW Talk radio for a while and true to form, overlooked the facts that MM is in use.

Oddly enough, high scores in Math and Science we also overlooked.

1. "At," not "to."

2. "Perceived" is the correct spelling.

3. "Perceived" takes care of the "real or imagined." Those last three words are gratuitous.

If you're going to make fun of somebody for mangling the English language, make sure you're not doing the same thing. Parodies work best when accurate.

We like to blame Gingrich and the "Class of '94" for the "lowering of the discourse" in recent times, but they were just responding to how wonderfully colloquial (read: vulgar) the Left became in the 60's in the only way they knew how: with reactionary stupidity.

From either side, it's pretty childish.

And some guy gives a report on the goings on at DU every week. Not to put us all down here, but the fact that these guys feel the need to report on a Democratic website every week shows they have WAY too much time on their hands. Why don't they put their thinking caps on to get us out of Iraq? Oh wait . . . not sure they really quite have brains. They're like the Collective Borg. We are the Freepers. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Once they're in there, no free thinking is allowed, except as the poster speaks of. Thinking of the latest spelling for a new insult.

Especially annoying is the use of that horrifying non-word "alot", as in "I have alot of respect for abunch of people who have posted apost here." By all rights those same people who think "a lot" is spelled "alot" probably think "an apple" is written "anapple" and "a Democrat" is written "Ademocrat". I just don't get it. 78. Misuses of toe, reign, and lose all drive me nuts
"tow the line" ... um, guys, it's "toe the line" as in put your toes on the line, not pull it.

"holding the reigns of power" or "during his rein" - both wrong. "holding the REINS" as in a horse's reins, and "during his REIGN" as in the last 5 years of Emperor Cokespoon's REIGN.

and the #1 drive-me-nuts misuse in all the world - "we're going to loose in 2008 if we don't change our position on <name your issue>." No, that would be "lose." To loose is to set free.

All those misuses make me automatically think "freeper idjit."

/end copy editor rant mode
