Joe Klein said Colbert's speech "wasn't funny"
Joe Klein

<snip>

"I went home that night and wet my bed. My mother had to come over to change the sheets 3 times. The routine wasn't funny and if we Democrats keep this up we're going to alienate the middle. This was a night for the press and the president to walk past mirrors and look at ourselves while we basked in the glory of looking at each other looking at us. He ruined it. We wanted to feel important not be exposed as buffoons.

HE RUINED IT. WAH WAH WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH NOT FUNNY WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

2. Live with it, Klein!
It was bold, courageous, comprehensive, wonderful and funny! We all liked it, and we're his audience. I wish that Steven would stay away from flying on small planes for awhile, though.

5. WE Democrats?
Given his ridiculous statements of late, I don't think Joe realizes he isn't one of us anymore.

There is no 'middle' to appeal to anymore, Joe. It's 'us' and 'them', and the majority of the American people are now 'us'.

As for this comment: "This was a night for the press and the president to walk past mirrors and look at ourselves while we basked in the glory of looking at each other looking at us," I can only assume that Joe is now letting Bush write his stuff.

8. Now THAT's funny, Joe.
Who'd a thought? Joe Klein, one of TIME magazine's anti-Democratic vast stable of whores, doesn't like it when a comedian speaks truth to power. He must be worried that the public will find out somebody else is doing his job.

MediaMatters.org pegged the TIME turds for the BFEE scum they are:

15. Yes, but it was supposed to be.
And it wasn't funny. It was fun to watch but Colbert's opening lines about 14 bullet-proof limos were sophomoric duds and he never got any laughter rolling. He did blow the water-in-the-glass line and it wasn't deliberate. Hidden microphones on the tables and multiple paths to finding Jesus are over worn and obvious gags.

It was entertaining to me because its usually fun to watch power get skewered. But I think he was supposed to be funny while doing it. And, he wasn't, IMHO.

18. If he wasn't funny, then why was I laughing and gasping?
Sometimes I guess it's hard for some people to grasp complex humor that doesn't feature a laugh track.

32. Those too were my thoughts and sentiments.
While Colbert was a welcome commentary using political satire and critique, it is based upon miserable reality and a bleak future if nothing is going to change. However, I don't believe that Joe Klein was thinking of this when he made his statement.

14. He really said that???
If this is true he needs to get a grip on himself and the truth. People are dying by the tens of thousands because of the President and his accomplices in the mainstream media. Innocent Iraqi civilians are being killed and maimed and living a life of hell thanks to them. Not to mention the 2300 American soldiers that have been killed and thousands more injured or disabled. Instead of coming clean with himself with regard to the role the pressed played in the lead up to the war, he is just concerned about having a good time at a pretentious and over the top press function with the resident in chief. Klein can go fuck himself.

23. I think it sounds that way
Surely nobody could say "this was a night for the press and the president to walk past mirrors and look at ourselves while we basked in the glory of looking at each other looking at us. He ruined it." and really be taking themselves seriously.

And if he says we wanted to feel important, not be exposed as buffoons, he is basically saying the speech was effective (in exposing them as buffoons). If he said "exposed as" (rather than, say, "called buffoons" or "made to look like buffoons"), then isn't he admitting the accuracy of Colbert's critique?

25. yes, those lines, and especially the opening
"I went home that night and wet my bed. My mother had to come over to change the sheets 3 times."

Obviously that is not serious!

Maybe this is a slam of those who are saying Colbert either flopped or "crossed the line?"

35. THAT'S RIGHT! Impossible to ....
make light of a president who is so dangerous to our country - it's no laughing matter! Colbert did what was called for at this point in our history, only thing a person of conscious could do, given the opportunity -- he is a true American hero; an American who refused to put his head in the sand!

21. Joe Klein wouldn't Know funny if it hit him in the face......
What's funny is that Joe Klein is trying to sell his lousy book....and because he's part of the Corporate Whore Press, it may be more difficult than ever now.....

Of course it's a book putting down Democrats as much as possible without making it too obvious.......as usual.

34. Actually, it wasn't funny.
It was sadly the truth. I listened to it and understood the satire, but felt immensely sad that a whole room of people could sit without acknowledging the truth of what he was saying or not understanding it to begin with.
