Poll question: Preliminary poll on 2006 elections.
I know it's early yet, but what are everyone's feelings thus far on the outcome of the midterm elections? Some of the discussion in this thread got me thinking about this.

Thank you in advance to all who vote and respond.

2. That's the best case scenario for sure.
I hope you're right.

5. I'm hedging on the Senate because we need Ohio to get the majority
and as long as Diebold and Blackwell are in Ohio (Blackwell is now running for governor), I pretty much give up winning that senate seat even if DeWine is polling behind both Brown & Hackett.

But I definately think we can win the House. I think we'll get the senate in 2008

6. I think that's very possible.
You're right about Ohio, it would take a miracle to win that seat. I have hope for the House, not so much for the Senate. But overall, I think at this point it could go in any direction.

3. Other
Bush will cancel the elections, for national security reasons, it being war time and all.

The case goes to the Supreme Court, and Justice Alito provides the swing vote. In his opinion, he writes, 'In a time of war the President can do whatever the fuck he wants"!

Scary thought.

7. We'll take back BOTH the House and Senate.
This Abramoff scandal ain't gonna go away. It will be one indictment after another in '06. THEN, KKKRove will be indicted. The Plame case will be in the news. The NSA story will be around for a LONG time to come. They are going to LOSE and LOSE BIG!

8. Agreed
2006 is going to be a brutal year for the Puglets. A vast multitude of maturing scandals, the increasingly undeniable disaster in Iraq, and a weakening economy that can no longer be sustained by massive Federal borrowing.

Ain't even gonna be close.

I'm not sure I have a lot of faith in the American people to look past the spin at what is really going on, but boy would I love to be wrong.

9. They'll gain seats but have a problem.
The public sees the whole system as corrupt. The Democrats are favored over the Republicans only as "not as bad" rather than as a real alternative.

The system is awash in money, corruption, and politicians who are all too eager to chase it.

It's time to change the system.

11. I definately agree there.
But first we need some swaying power in the system we already have. The only other alternative would be major and bloody revolution. I'm not sure most Americans are up for that -- too wrapped up in their individual lives to care that much.

We won't gain seats until we have honest elections.

25. Well, they can only steal close elections
If a democratic candidate is polling 20% above a reblican, they can't really steal that. It'd be way too obvious. People will only buy a 5% or so difference between the polls and the supposed final numbers.

Dems just need to turn out in 2006. Republicans will probably have low turnout with all the scandals. This is our best chance ever to take back congress, and we need to really pressure all of our democrat friends to vote.

15. I went for Dems gain but no majority
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 10:01 AM by mantrid
I don't think that would be such a bad outcome- Dem advances will put the wind up the GOP and further intensify their internal squabbling, making Bush's last couple of years a lot harder and laying a good foundation for 2008. Although obviously I do hope I'm wrong and Dems sweep both houses, and I certainly don't think that's outside the realms of possibility.

18. I respectfully disagree.
Maybe it's because I'm an optimist (most of the time, anyway), maybe it's because I'm in a blue state, but my experience tells me that many Republicans are growing increasingly unhappy with this administration. I just hope that translates into votes for Dems.

19. Unfortunately that's the problem
Are they out of favor? Yes. We're not taking up the slack though. The average person doesn't yet know why they shouldn't vote for a Republican-they just don't like these particular Republicans. the Repub party can still make up for this with new clones.
Maybe when the races actually start things will change, but I don't see it yet. The average American still thinks the guys in congress are corrupt but the Repub party will fix it.

20. Well, then that's one thing we need to get on our Dems about...
put the message out there that the problem is the Republicans, not just these Republicans. We have a pretty big Senate seat up for grabs in my state -- occupied now by a retiring Dem. The other Dems still seem to be tip-toeing around trying to keep it a Dem seat.

26. Exactly
IMO Howard Dean is doing a very good job of getting that message out-when he's heard. the Networks aren't, and haven't been, helping. And unfortunately too many of the politicians are playing it as business as usual.

21. Maybe the Senate but not the house
In my mind Taking back the house is a lost cause cause in the last 6 years GOP re-districting has made is impossible for democrats to take back seats from republican incumbents to lose.

For examples texas in '04 and pennsylvania in '02

The Senate, maybe

Can you prove me wrong though?

22. I think Dems win because of hatred for Bush!!
Typically mid-term elections don't bring out many voters. I think this year will be different. Hopefully, Repulican scandals and Bush stupidity will dominate the news. This should keep some Republican voters at home, while still bringing out Dem and Indy voters.

23. You could be right about that.
It could also bring out the Repub base in full force to counter the usual and new Dem votes.
