Trying to understand html linking.
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 09:09 PM by Radio_Lady
Suppose I want you to go to a certain link.

http://dtaylor.livejournal.com/

Do I type something such as go here to Dawn Taylor's blog

Then, how does the change of color and the "here" get underscored to provide the link itself?

Does the "HTML lookup table" explain this?

If so, I'm reading it right now.............

OK. Let me try this:

HTML tags can be used in your message simply by using < and > symbols in place of < and > symbols, respectively.

Special Tags
HREF link with text display Text
URL is without the "http://".
Example: DCScripts

2. This works specifically on DU this way
If you were trying to put a link elsewhere, you would have to add other code. DU's setup simplifies it for you.

4. Thanks. I just need to know -- WHAT IS THIS CHARACTER |
| | | (That's three of them in a row.)

Is it on a regular keyboard?

It's not a capital I ...

It's not a one 1 ...

It isn/t a slash front or back / \ ...

What exactly is it?

I think I've got the idea.

Go to my journal

5. It's the character Above the "\" on your keyboard.
Just shift and type that. It's called a pipe.

9. Oh, great. I should remember my software engineer husband...
Telling me, "Pipe it to MORE...!" An old DOS direction as I recall!

Thanks everyone! I'm so pleased with myself -- This proves you can teach an old dog new tricks! Actually, in dog parlance, I'm an old bitch!

12. Thanks, deary. I'll remember that.
When I was raising dogs, it was a term of endearment, without all the mumbo-jumbo attached. ;)

3. Using the first line from the HTTP lookup table...
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 08:47 PM by mcscajun
You'd insert your link info (the http stuff, but WITHOUT the http, colons or slashes. Start with the www...otherwise you'll get two of 'em and your link won't work) on one side of the |
and type the text you want to display on the other.

Leave the brackets intact at the beginning and end, naturally. So, if I type the http stuff for the Salon site on the one side of the | and salon.com on the other, I get this text link, which will take you to the Salon site:

Go to Salon.com

11. Now, Mcscajun, I have another question.
How did you get the grayed-out and small-type comment at the bottom of your message?

I've been trying to put in a comment in that area, but typing it into my preferences -- doesn't seem to do the job.

Are you using some html to do that?

available to all DUers in the profile info.

Options, Edit Profile...last item. Except for HTML stuff, everything in there will be grey.

14. OK. I just typed it in "Comments" box but DU didn't accept it.
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 08:57 PM by Radio_Lady
On the "Signature" line is the pointer to the Photobucket URL with my picture.

This was pasted into "Comments" but is not visible.

Maybe I can't have BOTH a photo and a comment?

15. If you typed it in and hit the "Update" button and DU didn't accept it
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 08:57 PM by mcscajun
there's probably an issue with this:

Your signature line may not exceed 400 characters. You may have no more than one image (.jpg or .gif format) in your signature line at any time. This image may not exceed 500 pixels wide, 200 pixels tall, or a file size of 20 kilobytes. You may not use any HTML code in your signature line except the special message board code for: bold, italics, links, center, and line breaks. You are limited to a maximum of two line break "br" tags.
