WHAT THE FUCK PEOPLE.... Why blame SUV drivers...some cars
have POOR ASS MILEAGE. So if you are going to blame drivers you need to blame those cars and MINIVANS that get poor mileage as well.

I'm sick of this dog and pony pissy pants liberal SUV bullshit. There are TONS of CARS, TRUCKS, JEEPS, SPORTS VEHICLES and MINIVANS that get POOR ass mileage and I don't see ya'll bitchin @ them.

SO IF you're gonna complain and FUCKIN BITCH GET YOUR FUCKIN FACTS STRAIGHT and BITCH @ ALL THE CULPRITS not just some.

Why not BAN Moto cross, 4wd events and NASCAR too.

That is fuckin all!

12. if people want to get serious they need to cut out ALL motorized vehicles
I agree with you - anything over a 4 cyl(Reg. Engine) is wasteful also the auto sports are wasteful.

You can call me crazy - or roll your eyes but you know I'm right.

However some cities aren't made for bicycle use. So, it is impractical to ask.

btw - my lady and I drive a camry and a corolla both are 4 cyl. and both get over 30 mpg.

We would like to upgrade to something far more fuel efficient, but we are saving $$$ in the mean time.

I agree with your post - this gas deal is about more than one type of vehicle - it is about lifestyles and the entertain me now culture

61. An "All or Nothing" Approach Means Nothing Gets Done
Presumably "all motorized vehicles" doesn't include public transport, which we desperately need more of.

Auto sports could easily be turned from something wasteful into an engine for energy-saving innovation.
Just limit the amount of fuel the cars can use to complete the course. See who can do it the fastest with
the fixed allotment of fuel. Then you'll see hybrids, fuel cells and all sorts of stuff coming into play.

SUV primarily used by 1 person to commute to work - never touches a dirt road - bad

SUV used by a construction guy to haul equipment around - OK

SUV used by Mom to haul kids around - OK

SUV like a HUMVEE to compensate for small penis - bad

98. I own a Chevy Suburban, am I selfish and myopic?
It can easily carry eight adults, and gets 22mpg on the highway when fully loaded. It routinely carries the four of us around, plus I use it for my job. Ever try to carry a compressor, toolbox, generator, arc welder, etc. around in a vehicle? How about the four 22.5 Lo-Pro trailer tires, like the ones that I had re-capped; they weigh about 100lbs. each and stand waist high? What would you suggest that I use? I need the capability to haul both passengers and cargo, so it was either a crew-cab pickup or this. I bought it used and got a great deal on it, as fuel use was not a problem for me, as it was for the previous owner.

I drive 23 miles one way to work, and only do that once every 5 to 6 days or so. I leave the vehicle parked at my terminal when I am out on the road working. When I fill up it lasts me over a month, so I probably use LESS gasoline on average in my Big Honkin' SUV than most of the self-righteous posters on this subject do.

Sweeping generalizations and ignorance of another persons' needs are not liberal values, and I won't be taken on a guilt trip by anyone. I refuse to buy the ticket.

My little RX8 (thirsty rotary engines) only gets 15-18 mpg, when I bought it gas was $1.42. Now I'm wishing I could turn back time. Went to trade it in for a Toyota Pruis this weekend and they would give me less than what I owe on the loan, so I'm screwed.

but I never see them blaming these HUGE big rigs or trains that use crazy amounts of fuel and is more dangerous than a SUV will ever be.

on the road now. Cool and rebuilt but the gas mileage suks. We should give them the finger too.

36. 40 mpg is achievable w/o compromising safety, performance, comfort
1. Integrated microprocessor control of transmission, mixture, timing, injector - using off the shelf technology - today

2. Continuously variable transmissions

3. Hybrid - and plug in hybrid - at the heavier weight end of the market, and higher performance segment of the market.

What the "industry" has done is to take technology that yields 40 mpg in a 2500 pound car - and put it in a 4500 pound car and say "Gee whiz - we don't have to pay the gas guzzler tax on this 4500 pound car." BUT they haven't implemented it in the 2500 pound car.

38. We have a jeep
It's our only car, our only option for transportation, and we can't afford to replace it even with something used. It gets 22mpg. It sits in our driveway most of the time because we work from home. We fill it maybe, maybe twice a month.

Are we part of the problem?

I've avoided the bash SUV threads for some time because I got tired of reminding people that everyone's circumstances are different and indiscriminately labeling folks is wrong -- something you'd think Dems/Liberals would already know.

Thank you for posting this, Xultar. :)

suv thing, it's like a trailblazer only longer, anywho they have six children and her brother lives with them who is a quadriplegic so the suv thing has been retrofitted to handle his chair. I don't know of alternative vehicles they could buy that would allow them better gas mileage.

I can't afford a car note or I'd buy a car. All I pay now is insurace.

54. Why not blame commuting?
It makes my blood boil when people blame vehicles instead of blaming how much people drive. I have a pick up, but I only fill it up once a month because I walk to work and walk to the store, restaurants, bars, movies, etc.

When I was filling up my gas tank a couple weeks ago, someone told me it was because of people like me that gas is $3 a gallon.

60. Live with it. SUVs have become status symbols to wealth and arrogance
Hummers are the cream of the crop when it comes to the epitome of gluttony and arrogance. Hey if you are taking this personally, that only means that it must be hitting you where it hurts.

If Americans didn't want their status symbol SUV despite the fact blood is being spilled for the gas that is being wasted in their "toys", I wouldn't care. SUV's have become the status symbol much like "Soccer Moms". Besides SUV's are really a new type vehicle, not too many years ago, they didn't exist in the way that they do now. Heck, my husband used to drive a SUV 20 years ago for his job (company vehicle) he would haul construction materials to and from job sites as part of his job, so he needed a rugged heavy duty vehicle. When bigass SUV's became COOL, then the prices shot up and his company went to smaller more economical minivans, that had a lower sticker price and were better on gas mileage. So, because a new "status symbol" was born, my husbands company changed from a heavy duty vehicle used for hauling to something else, so that soccer moms and guys with a need to be "the man" could drive them to the neighborhood soccer games. So, when you think about it, It is the PERFECT symbol to gluttony, arrogance and superficiality. Who now NEEDS a big ass SUV? There are roomy sedans and wagons and more fuel efficient mini vans out there.

There are some of the smaller SUV'S that are just fine, it is just the big ass gas guzzling atrocities that are the epitome of "everything everywhere is all about me"

When this country,as a whole, starts respecting life and stops this endless entitlement illness we will have smaller more gas economical vehicles - to start with.

When I see the bigass SUVs, I think, "How many lives per gallon does that cost?"

How much fuel do those burn? Cut back on commercial flights as well. There should be very few empty seats on commercial flights so the airlines use as little fuel as possible. Cut back on Greyhound trips as well. why should there be many empty seats on those trips? Efficiency, people!

64. SUVs are just the gas hogs that block our view most often
I've posted here before that it also matters how far you drive. Someone driving an econobox from the exurbs 60 miles or more from work 5 days a week is going to use more gas than an urban dweller with an SUV who uses the thing mostly to do grocery shopping and get out of the city on weekends.

However, whenever I see monster pickups, momvans or SUVs, I think of my pop. He called them all "Those goddamned rolling billboards."

And THAT is why people tend to hate them.

69. categorically SUVs are worse than cars
simply because the unnecessary features they embody necessitate increased vehicle mass or aerodynamic resistance.

In all likelihood wasteful cars with large displacement engines still get better gas mileage than an SUV of equivalent engine size.

Therefore as a means everyday conveyance no SUV is superior to a car. People who live in the boonies(save farmers) ensure that their lifestyle will continue to be energy intensive and devoid of mass transit.

77. Actually I blame the 1/2 ton truck phenom more. The new sports car.
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 12:29 PM by newportdadde
It seems like those 1/2 dodges are the cool thing to have right now for white men 30-50 in KC. If your a guy and have family I guess they don't want to face the humiliation of a sedan or mini-van so here comes the 1/2 ton 4 door truck cranking a solid 12mpg. The ultimate daily commuter for the white collar office worker male.

Alot of the SUV hate comes from field of vision obstruction they have. If you pull up to a stop and have an SUV roll up to either side you can't see a damn thing for oncoming traffic if your in just a regular car.

Ow and personally my wife and I get by just fine with a Buick LeSabre and guess what we fit ourselves and THREE car seats in there, a 2 year old and two new twins.

89. People Bought Pickup Trucks 'Cause They Want to be a Cowboy Like Bush**
Others bought them to avoid the stigma associated with SUVs.

And some simply need to haul a lot of stuff.

Pickup trucks are even less fuel-efficient (and even higher on the road) than SUVs
(though there is some overlap).

88. SUV's aren't THE problem, they are just highly symptomatic of it.
And yes crappy old Ford Galaxy 500s and F-150s that get 12 mpg should be included. And sometimes they are because it's about excess and waste, not simply the body style.

However, the SUV issue goes beyond simple MPG, it also factors into the dying manufacturing base of an industry in the US that is married to outmoded ideas. It's an iconic representation of the BIGGER ME syndrom that's all about ME and not about YOU. And it's reached the level of cultural fetish in some neighborhoods...when MOST of the drivers on your block are single passenger people driving to work and never in need of 4 wheel drive...why are half the vehicles Oversized for our roads and parking spaces and getting less than 20 mpg? Heck why are they getting less than 25 mpg?

Can we extend it beyond SUVs to many other vehicles and activities? Sure...and I see a lot fewer people taking long sunday drives and a lot more telecommuting. If we're talking about Motocross and NASCAR it would be an interesting study to find out what % of our daily gas is used on these activities. Then compare it to the amount of gas used to drive Hummers to the 7-11 to pick up a bag of chips.

I'm willing to dispense with the term SUV as the prime identified culprit in the gas guzzling debate if we can INCLUDE SUVs along with any other similarly wasteful/sized vehicles in the discussion about responsible CAFE standards and Social Sensitivity/Responsibility (Parking, pollution, etc). I suspect in the end SUVs won't look better for it. But if the inclusiveness helps the debate more power to it.

I suspect that of CURRENT cars being manufactured in the US, SUVs ARE the largest violators of what most of us would consider reasonable standards for efficiency. I also suspect that if we look at real driving habits they are guilty of OVERKILL in terms of size and impact on the roads and environment.

That doesn't mean I'd do away with them all...I know Ranchers and contractors who need big trucks, I know a Forest Ranger who goes in places an SUV is ideal, even necessary for. But I also know that in a world of limited oil and space, a Hummer or a Tahoe is too much for one person going to pick up some take-out food (and we have a Hummer Driving Pizza delivery in my neighborhood...figure that out). There are exceptions. But I doubt EVERYONE is the exception, which is the tone I've been picking up lately.

In the end I understand prior investment...not everyone can simply drop what they are driving today and grab a hybrid or a moped. Not everyone can telecommute, and not everyone has access to mass transit. So we should ease up on our knee-jerk assumptions about anyone driving a car that isn't as little as ours. The Smugness isn't helping. But we also have to be able to have a real discussion where we acknowledge that sometimes we do things that aren't totally in line with our values. And sometimes we have to accept some things in the grey zone for a while as we hammer out specifics. Figuring out sane/moral/reasonable Size, Safety, and CAFE standards is certainly worthy of such a discussion.

On the other side, moving past the defensiveness I'm seeing here, a lot of people need to look long and hard in the mirror and ask themselves how often they are really packing in 6 kids, and how necessary, efficient, or socially conscious their decision to drive the BIG IRON really is. Not asking them to change tomorrow...but maybe be a bit more reflective and rationalize a bit less when they talk about how justified the SUV Community in GENERAL is. Don't take the criticism so personally for a minute and look at the bulk of those around you. Are they really being as responsible as you are? Or is your exception the rule for all the rest?

I can admit that I could stil do better than my current 25-28mpg. In fact I' d really like to. And as soon as finances permit I will, and when I am in a position to look for a new position, location and access to mass transit WILL be a factor in my decision. If we all just were able to say that much I think we'd be a mile ahead.

As for the SUV owners on DU, the barbs have been so weak for so long, I dont think they pay attention to it anymore. Same goes for the people who smoke, or shop at Wal-Mart, or eat fast food, or live in the South, or are DLC, or DNC and its blah, blah-blah, blah-blah-blah

Which is why you are the only one with any style.
