Freakers In Almost Psychotic Denial That Brokeback Mountain Is A Hit

It's a fascinating cultural phenomenon to watch a group of not very bright people feed off each other's naked bigotry and anger. The group-think denial there is fascinating, because the reality and truth of gay people turns the fantasy world of religious rightwingers upside down.

Over the past three weeks, there has been thread after thread about Brokeback Mountain, one angrier than the next. The basic tenet being - Hollywood has foisted this depraved, un American story on the country and that it would be rejected by the public.

When the movie opened in limited release and was a runaway hit with heretofore unseen huge per screen averages, the Freeper meme changed to "sure, it's playing in San Francisco to a bunch of perverts, but it will never play in the Heartland."

As the movie has expanded, it not only has begun to play in the Heartland, it is on fire in the Heartland. It is the number one movie in almost all the theaters where it is playing - in places like Salt Lake City, Nashville and Lubbock, Texas. It is becoming a main stream hit before our eyes.

This process has had the effect of utterly disorienting the Freepers who predicted it would flop, filling them with uncontrolled rage and confusion. The tinfoil hat crowd has gone so far as to accusing gay "activists" of buying Brokeback tickets every time they go to the theater, even if they are seeing other flicks, thus inflating the numbers.

This utter disconnect from reality we are witnessing in the religious right over this movie is an amazing and vivid window into the very heart of bigotry.

Brokeback Mountain demolishes the very foundation of homophobia: these are two masculine, ordinary guys who happen to be gay and who fall in love as deeply and profoundly as any straight couple ever has. The brilliance of the movie is in the ordinary way it shows that human beings ARE all the same, regardless of with whom we are hotwired to fall in love.

This rather ordinary, mundane fact of life has jolted the religious right community, forcing it to face head on the lies it has told to its children for generations, the lies its leaders continue to propound.

Brokeback shines a bright light on the moral untruths of the religious right and those untruths crack wide open and rot in the blinding sun.

Sounds like someone is playing with the numbers.

Figures are fake but real. There are multiple reports
of "sold out" nearly empty halls, and ticket boxes
issuing tickets for other titles, but credited to BB.

I require independent verification.

I have a great deal of trouble believing the "Sheep Herding Rump Rangers and the Livestock who Love Them" is doing well anywhere outside of homosexual enclaves on the coasts.

And NO, they ain't Cowboys!

Are you kidding, my good friend? Every gay person in the United States is going to see this picture at least ten times, if not more. They will be joined by the entire Democrat Party. So expect the numbers to head upward similar to Michael Moore's "Farhenheit 911" which reached $119M gross revenue. Of course, in the real world, the political impact of Farhenheit 911 came to zilch, and was scuddled by a puny political ad worth $100K put forth by a group known as the Swift Boat Vets, which promptly proceeeded to destroy John "Traitor" Kerry. Yes, the gays folks are loving life today, but when the reality of tomorrow and the real world strikes home, they will find this movie vehicle a lost cause, no matter what the revenue numbers are. Folks, please take note of the declining viewership at all the award shows. You can't piss down a common sense person's back and tell them it's raining!!! Brokeback Mountain is going nowhere. You ought tune in to the "Black" music stations in Dallas. The negative one liners about "Brokeback" are truly both truthful, honest and funny!!!

4. What pathetic assholes...
I almost feel bad for them. Not only is it a hit in the major Blue metros like NYC, LA, San Fran, Detroit, Chicago, DC, Seattle etc etc, it's a hit in Nashville, Columbus and Dallas, averaging more than $10,000 a screen in those cities.
When I saw it last weekend, I showed up for the 1:30 showing, but didn't see it until 5:30 (2:30 and 3:30 showings were also sold out).

Sorry freepers, it's true: The gay cowboy flick is a big hit, and I'd advise you not to watch the Oscars - you might have a breakdown.

8. Well, at Least the Film is Different
And Hollywood desperately needs new ideas right now. Box-office is down, & I don't think it's just because of i-pods or the internet. It's because we keep seeing the same types of films, over & over again. Who wants to pay for expensive tickets & food when the films are just the same old, same old?

9. "American Beauty" had a lot of criticism too
but it was a well done film and won the Oscar for Best Picture. In the end no one gives a hoot what the conservatives have to say.

15. Actually, people *did* give a hoot
The vitriol brought a lot of people in to see "American Beauty" who probably would not have seen it otherwise, which made the movie more profitable. And I have little doubt that the members of the Acadamy voted with an eye towards thumbing their nose that the willfully ignorant know-nothings who constantly blame Hollywood for all of America's ills.

The louder and harsher the criticism from the soi-disant "guardians of public morality", the better the movie will do at the box office and at the awards.

12. I love the reallocation of money
Apparently the Hollywood desire to force gay men down our throat (sorry :) ) is so strong that other motion picture companies don't mind being robbed to help make it successful. Instead of ruthless competition, we get complete coorperation.

right.

They honestly think that the movie's political impact was "zilch?" Their boy isn't gonna be around to steal 2008--I'd advise those sheepfuckers to stay on their toes.

them to the core.

Instead, they speak from ignorance.

It was one of the most beautiful and haunting movies I have seen. I have been talking it up to family and friends, because I believe it has "classic" written all over it.

I'd love to see a freep's review if he/she actually saw it. MKJ

18. Actaully, It's Not Generating All That Much Gross Revenue So Far
Look at the box office figures from Yahoo:
Weekend Box Office Actuals
Jan 6 - 8 weekend
ThisWk LastWk Title Weekend Cumulative #Weeks #Theaters

1 - Hostel $19,556,099 $19,556,099 1 2195
2 1 Narnia $15,643,135 $247,777,824 5 3514

---snip

7 7 Mem. Geisha $6,111,193 $39,861,859 5 1589
8 14 Brokeback Mtn $5,726,662 $22,436,190 5 483
9 5 Rumor Has It... $5,702,435 $35,202,061 3 2766

What's amazing is the number of theaters it's being shown in. It's generating more revenue on 483 screens than "Rumor Has It" is bringing in on 2,766! That is astounding -- there are certainly some sold out showings there.

I also expect Brokeback Mountain to be around for awhile. The buzz and word of mouth are absolutely amazing.

23. The Freeps are probably having second thoughts about
what they watch and listen to in the supposedly privacy of their own compounds lately.

They won't admit it, but I will bet more than a few of them rethink some of the things they do knowing the NSA could be watching or listening to them.

25. They are utterly obsessed. . .and they look like the wimpy
dysfunctional hetero-supremacists that they are. . .maybe it's the idea that gay people likely fall in love more than the Freepers can ever do. . .maybe it's their utter jealousy that in a society which has coddled the hetero-supremacist white male for centuries, these Freeper losers still can't score a date.
